The Truth About Willpower

Written by: Nick Ortner

Henry Ford quoteWe’re twenty-eight days into the New Year. How’s it going so far? How are those resolutions, intentions, goals, and dreams going? Have they all fallen apart already?!? If you’re like most people, you might believe that you could improve your life if you just had a little more of that mysterious magic sauce… willpower.

“If only I had more self-control, I could eat right, exercise more, make better financial decisions, stop procrastinating, and turn my life around.” Sound familiar?

Here’s the challenge:

Recent research has shown that willpower is similar to a muscle, in that it gets fatigued! You can say no to the cookie once, but then the 2nd time it’s offered and the 3rd time…each of those choices requires willpower and quickly exhausts it!

“Oh, just give it to me already! Why do I even bother?!”

So… what to do? Well, it’s my experience that when you get to the ROOT beliefs, experiences, expectations, self-image, and more, then change becomes EFFORTLESS. Why? Because we’re changing who we ARE, at the core, instead of trying to force ourselves to change.

When these changes happen at the level of our identity, then the resulting actions don’t require this muscle of willpower. So going to the gym isn’t a chore, it’s an exciting adventure, just part of who we are.

Making healthy food choices isn’t difficult, it’s what we want and craves from every cell of our body. Procrastination is no longer an issue because we don’t fear the action, we embrace it with all aspects of our being.

The Big Question Now

How do we get to these root beliefs, experiences, expectations, self-image, and more? Whereas in the past, it was often a struggle to make changes at this level, EFT Tapping is extraordinarily effective at doing just that.

Since it works directly with the amygdala in the brain, it can rewrite these old patterns in dramatic levels. I’ve seen it in my life and in the lives of hundreds of thousands of other people who made this profound choice, to use this simple and powerful technique and change their lives.

I want to help you harness the energy of the New Year, and not face the struggle and disappointment that we often feel a month into the year when everything seems to be back to normal, and failure is riding alongside us again.

To that end, I have an awesome new podcast to share from my sister, Jessica.  The expectations and pressure we put on ourselves are often the very things that keep us stuck in place.

Tap away the frustration and learn how to set yourself up for success in this podcast. Change is easier (and more fun) than you think!

You’ll find new insights and awareness, and just doing the tapping can be just what you need to kickstart these changes.

Let 2016 be YOUR year. Make that choice, to throw off the chains of your past, those old habits, those old failures, that old self-doubt, and finally embrace the greatness of YOU.

Until next time…

Keep Tapping!

Nick Ortner

  4. Irene says:

Its so true for me. I start something, visualisation. positive affirmations etc but because nothing happens fast enough I lose heart ans do not persevere. I have tried tapping ever since it was started all those years ago but I get very frustrated with the lack of results. I am never sure of what affirmations to say. And because I am somewhat financially challenged I do not visit accredited practiioners- I try to do it on my own. Yes, your comments have brought up in me the feelings of disappointment at my lack of perseverance in my efforts.

    Hello there Nick and Jessica.
Thanks and appreciation for your podcast and regular helpful posts. However I concur with some others here in that I have not been able to activate the podcast at all. just some friendly feedback.
    Thank you.

Jessica – this was powerful for me. I followed along tapping on a different goal/fear than the caller, but it was amazing how the words you said on the tapping points still almost all perfectly fit and needed to be remembered.

    Dear Nick,

Thank you very much for this article and all for all the insights it gave me. Indeed, my intention to go to the gym is already more a dream, then a reality !
So, I would like to know more about the research on the willpower being a muscle. That sound really intersting. Is it a scientific discovery ? Who made it ? Could you send us a link about it ?
I am going to watch your video tonight and do the tapping. I am looking forward to it !
Again, thank you very much, and continue to inspire us with your posts.

Hello Nick. This is Shirin from Australia about my draw backs. I was born & brought up in Bangladesh (East Pakistan) formerly. At the age of 21, I came to Australia to accompany my ex- husband. Now I am with a bit of mixtures of what ever I can accommodate with my restricted beliefs, not much of will power. At this age of 65, I am trying to get to know few thing for my self improvement & self healing. So, I will appreciate whatever you want to improve in me or bring our from within me. I really appreciate you & Jassica. With much love. Shirin

  10. Jessie says:

I feel like I always get a great start at the new year… I outline my goals and wholeheartedly want to achieve them, but I always fall back into the same patterns and routines. I just recently purchased Jessica’s audio book and I am working on listening to it for the second time. I feel like I want to take everyone that I love aside and teach them this technique so that they can experience the freedom that I have felt in just the short time I have been practicing tapping. My daughter recently had to go to the Emergency Room and I was able to tap away some pretty severe anxiety while we were there. This allowed me to be able to be present and comforting for her instead of just dissolving in to tears and being engulfed by fear. I wish that I could begin adequately express my gratitude for you and Jessica and this site. I hope to be able to take part in Jessica’s online course sometime too!
