Financial Success

7 Things Successful People Do

Written by: Nick Ortner

What is it that makes some people successful in life – able to reach whatever goal they like – while others get stuck in the same place for years, if not decades?

Is it their education? Where they were born? Who their family is? Is it genetics?

The reality is… it’s none of the above!

In my working with thousands of people over the years to help them change their lives – to help them create both financial success and personal fulfillment – I’ve found 7 things in particular that successful people do differently.

I’ve outlined them below. How many of these 7 things are you doing?

1 – They Change How They Think & Feel

Change-your-mindset-smallLet’s start with how they think:
Talk to anybody who built success in their life and they’ll tell you that they changed their thinking in order to get different results. Every one of us is a product of our thinking. Our finances, relationships, health, happiness, and every other area are dictated by our thinking. If you want a different result in life, you need to change your thinking first.

How they feel:
Very often people get hung up on “thinking like successful people” and forget a key element: what they’re feeling. Listening to your emotions is critical to understanding what is holding you back, both consciously and unconsciously.

Successful people know that our emotions drive everything. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, afraid, stressed, sad, depressed, or any other negative emotion, your brain is less resourceful and less able to help you make good decisions or take important actions. If you want to have more energy, make better decisions, be more creative, and have more success in life…

Develop the habit of paying attention to your emotions. Then do what’s needed to be in the right emotional state (like using Tapping, which we’ll get to later!) 🙂

.

2 – They Believe They Deserve Success

Be You And Believe In Yourself Successful people believe they deserve success; unsuccessful people do not.

The area where this is most evident is with money. Financially successful people generally feel they deserve to be successful, and so they’ve created it in their lives.

So what qualifies somebody as “deserving success” or not? Only one thing… the rules they create for it in their own brain.

Oftentimes, people think (consciously or unconsciously) they don’t deserve success because of false beliefs like, “I’m not a good enough person,” or “I don’t work hard enough,” or “I’m not smart enough,” or any other from a laundry list of negative limiting beliefs.

In order to find out what you believe about success just SAY and COMPLETE these two phrases out loud:

  • I don’t deserve success because… (say what first comes up, don’t question it)
  • I deserve success because… (say what first comes up, don’t question it)

When you say these two phrases out loud, your unconscious brain will give you the reasons that have been programmed as to why you believe one way or the other. If you’re not getting the answer you’d like (or you’re surprised by what’s coming up), don’t worry…

I’ll show you how to change your belief systems around success shortly, all using EFT Tapping!

Remember, at the end of the day every person – and I mean EVERY person – deserves success. Every person is capable of growth, of love, of giving beyond themselves… and being rewarded for it! Anyone can succeed financially, in relationships, with their health, in any area of their life.

I’ll show you how to get there. You can start by downloading my free eBook, 103 Disempowering Beliefs About Money and Success, and How to Eliminate them in Minutes.

.

3 – They Overcome Events & Patterns That Don’t Serve Them

Past-and-FutureMost of the habits, patterns, and beliefs that we have today were developed between the ages of 0 and 6 years old. They weren’t developed consciously, they were essentially downloaded from our parents, and from other people & events happening around us at the time.

We didn’t have a choice about what beliefs were given to us, or events were happening around us. Unfortunately, many of those beliefs, patterns, and experiences were negative and have limited us in our adult life.

Some have had tougher upbringings than others, with more negative experiences and more negative beliefs about themselves and the world, but regardless of the experiences…

There is good news!

Today, as adults, we have a choice over what beliefs, patterns, and habits we want to keep or discard… And we have a choice over the meanings we give our past experiences.

Successful people are aware of how limiting old beliefs, habits, patterns, and experiences can be… and they do whatever it takes to change them!

That doesn’t mean it’s always easy. Overcoming childhood abuse issues, or deep-rooted self-confidence issues, or overwhelmingly negative thought patterns can be a challenge. But successful people are committed to their own growth, no matter what.

They know that the past does not equal the future. They understand that past challenges can either be dwelled upon for years, or accepted as necessary life lessons on their path.

Overcoming limiting beliefs and difficult events from your past is something that EFT Tapping is especially powerful at helping with, more so than any other technique I’ve ever seen.

I’ve had the privilege of using Tapping to help people with some enormous challenges through our Tapping Solution Foundation: Veterans with PTSD, children genocide survivors in Rwanda, first responders of the Sandy Hook school shooting (my home town), and much more.

4 – They Silence Their Critical Voice

Tremenous-Courage-2A common misconception is that successful people don’t have doubts, that they don’t have a critical voice, that they’re not afraid when they face tough challenges. Reality couldn’t be further from the truth.

Successful people face all of these challenges regularly, and probably more often than unsuccessful people, because of how much they challenge themselves.

They just use tremendous courage to never let it stop them.

The good thing is that courage is a muscle that can be flexed and developed over time. Every successful person had to overcome their critical voice over little things before they moved onto bigger and bigger things.

Building this muscle starts with having the courage to address your critical voice, on anything big or little. Listen to what it has to say… And then overcome it!

.

5 – They’re Willing to Fail, Repeatedly

Failure-JourneySuccessful people see failure as part of the learning process. And no matter how much they fail, they’re never willing to quit.

They also never see failure as defining who they are. When unsuccessful people fail, they see themselves as a failure.

Learn to never see yourself as a failure and to see failure itself as a learning process. Then, you’ll never do the one thing you’re avoiding… failing.

“How’s that?” you’re thinking.

Because failing implies that the journey is over. If you see individual failures as a part of a long journey of success, then you, in fact, never actually fail. 🙂

Here’s a list of some of the most successful people ever throughout modern history who never let individual failures stop them:

Henry Ford – Failed in his early business projects and was left broke 5 times before he founded Ford Motor Company.

R. H. Macy – Founder of the Macy’s department store, R.H. Macy started 7 failed businesses before finally hitting it big with his store in New York City.

Walt Disney – Walt Disney was fired by a newspaper editor because “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.” After that, he started a number of businesses that didn’t last long and ended with bankruptcy and failure.

Albert Einstein – Einstein didn’t speak until he was four and didn’t read until he was seven, which made his teachers and parents think he was mentally handicapped, slow, and anti-social.

Jerry Seinfeld – The first time he walked on stage he froze and was jeered and booed off the stage. Do you think he quit after that? Nope. The very next night he came back and completed his set to laughter and applause.

I could go on and on with people like this but I think you get it.

Failure never exists IF you see it as part of a long journey of success.

In fact, if you want to hear about how I personally “failed” my way to success, I encourage you to watch this free webinar that I put together just for you!

.

6 – They Do the Difficult Things First

Important-Things-FirstPretty much every person I talk to or come across on a daily basis feels that they have too much going on, that they’re too busy. It seems to just be a part of this modern lifestyle.

When it comes to our time, and what we do with it each day, successful people have one tremendously important trait that makes them successful…

They do the important things FIRST, not the easy things.

If you wait until you have more time to do the important things, you run out of time. It’s why people don’t exercise, or write that book, or start that business.

Successful people prioritize their lives differently. They know that the important stuff is what will get them to where they want to be. They do the big tasks on projects at the beginning of the day, and they leave the emails to later in the day.

If you want to be more successful, learn how to do the tasks that matter first.

.

7 – They Take Daily Action

Clarity-2Successful people know that there is tremendous power in clarity.

They get clear on what they want to achieve and who they want to be in life, and they take consistent daily action to get there.

They never let their current limitations stop them from seeing a better future.

Unsuccessful people ruminate on their current situation and challenges. They never allow themselves to have seemingly unrealistic futures.

Successful people allow themselves to dream and then work to get there, even if there isn’t a clear path to achieving what they want.

They also see themselves not just as they are now, but better than they are now! They hold a vision for themselves of how they can grow into being more successful, happier, more giving people.

If you struggle to dream big or find yourself finding reasons for why your dreams can’t come true, don’t worry. Together, we’ll work to eliminate the mental blocks that are keeping you from building an empowering future.

.

The Lightbulb feeling moment for me was “Doing what is important first”. I see how I prioritise the small stuff first so I can create a “now I deserve to do the other stuff now” space in my life. Great awareness change moment. Thank you Nick for the Tapping.

  2. Jackie says:

Hi Nick This article was just what the “UNIVERSAL DOCTOR ORDERED”!!!!!!!! Going through some challenges with my business and this was a reminder and “WAKE UP CALL” not to “GIVE UP” REMEMBERING to TAPP, Thanks for Everything.

    Warmest Regards,
    Jackie

  3. Patty says:

These 7 things encouraged me to know that I’m not alone in my thinking and that I can be successful.
I’m dyslexic, so I struggled in school big time! I’ve always thought I was stupid. I’ve never wanted to try things because I was afraid I would fail. I failed so many things over my life.
I’m 61 and I don’t work. I was a stay at home mom, and I have a husband that provides for me beautifully.
I want not to feel stupid anymore. I have a lot of fears from my childhood, because I struggled so much in school. It effected my confidence in so many ways. I’m a big people pleaser and I want to stop it and feel like I’m confident. I guess I don’t feel like I deserve to be successful because I feel like I’m lazy. Sometimes I feel like I’m lazy because I’m afraid ill fail.
My greatest strengths are, that I’m loyal and I very organized. I’m good mother and wife. I’m a giving person. I’m taking this course because I feel it can help me with my self-esteem.

  4. Lou says:

Pay attention to your thoughts. Change those you know hold you back and focus on what you want. When you start each day being thankful what you have, for the coming opportunities of this new day, be willing to be present in mind.

  5. Tujuana Jenkins says:

Regardless of what you go through in life, you can be successful. It takes effort, but it can be done; from being a great parent to owning a successful business! One of my greatest strengths to being more successful is that I never give up. One of my greatest challenges is a lot of times when I accomplish something the people I love tend to not be involved and I draw back because of fear of being by myself.

  6. Jude says:

This has opened my eyes to not sweat the small stuff but get onto what’s at hand and that is creating a business plan. I have a very clear vision of the future but getting there is the frustrating part for me. ?

  7. Terry says:

I am on the brink of starting my own business. These seven items resonate through my very soul! This article was perfectly timed for me. Number 3 made me stop immediately to tap a problem I finally understood after 40 years. I had been trying to figure it out since I began tapping about 8 years ago. It finally came through and I rid myself completely of the emotion around it. This article is one of the first big blessings today. Thank you Nick for making it available.

  8. EFT / TAPPING ARTICLES » Blog Archive EFT For Action and Success says:

[…] Taking steps towards success by definition requires you to go outside your current comfort zone and into a zone which is currently a discomfort zone for you. […]

  9. When doubt creeps in do this… - The Tapping Solution says:

[…] And these moments, RIGHT THERE…that PAUSE in inspiration where DOUBT kicks in…are the moments that separate success from failure. […]

  10. Chris says:

Belief in myself is the toughest thing for me. There is sometime blocking me from getting what I want that I haven’t been able to identify and deal with completely. I’m trying tapping to see if I can use this tool to get past these beliefs. I’m optimistic!

  11. Diana says:

Making a to do list : this reminded me that used to do this the last time I was successful.
What I got out of the 7 was, failure leads to success.

  12. L.U.C.I.A. says:

i have to be more sure about myself. I can do a lot, i must believe that
i did not have a fantastic childhood but i learned so much through it
thank you so much, you are helping me a lot
    really appreciating it

  13. Susan says:

Oh the ebb and flow I know so well. The “victim” of circumstance all the reasons/excuses for being stuck in the ebb. I have been successful I have built my self from the bottom to the top. I am now in that process again starting over once again to build success to be all I can be. I know I have to change my daily routine. I know I have to focus on what I want not what I don’t want. I love success stories. I have always wanted more to push myself. Sure it’s out of the comfort zone at first but you keep pushing and keep thinking positive and visualize what you want and it will become attracted to you. The universe will bring it to you. I am taking an on line course to become certified in EFT level 1 and 2. First I am helping myself and second I will help others. I am excited to share my success story one day soon.

  14. Mary says:

Excited!! Looking forward to learning how to silence my inner critic, how to trust my intuition and believe in myself unreservedly. Anticipating how tapping will help me achieve my intentions, goals and dreams to get me to the life I have designed for myself.

  15. jody casey says:

thank you for sharing the 7 Things Successful People Do Differently it really opened my eyes to a lot of my daily thought path i need more coaching in this area of my life

  16. Sue says:

Ive done things which have improved my life over the past couple of years, by pushing myself and believing I can do certain things which have made me richer in friendships and experience and brought lots of fun and a hunger to do more, I just need to learn how to improve my earning (money) power to enable me to carry on being able to do these things and support my family and myself towards a better future, to make this expansive life a full time reality.

  17. Careen says:

My strengths are that I don’t see failure as failure but a learning curve & that I know that I deserve success & I know exactly what I want. My biggest challenge is not doing the important things first ( I procrastinate) & push important things for later & end up not doing them. I also realized that I have been recreating my past by my thinking, talking & actions, which I am working on by saying mantras & basically being aware of my thinking by monitoring my feelings

  18. Miranda says:

I dont trust my memory or brain to be accurate. Seems to be a destructive pattern.

  19. Levy Jensen says:

Never give up. No matter how bumpy the road you take just keep moving. That is part of the journey of success

  20. Shirley says:

I do have a tendency to procrastinate.I am working on that. For example, I want to live my next years in the tropics. I recently listed my place for sale and I am sure it will sell to the right person.my question is what steps can I take on a daily basis toward that goal? I have already decluttered and staged my place.

    • Nick Ortner says:

Hi Shirley. Great job setting your intention and taking action. Tapping a little bit each day on your goal and how it will feel to be where you want to be can be helpful. Then, if any blocks come up that feel like they could hold you back, tap to release those and allow yourself to move forward with ease. We wish you all the best!

  21. Abbey says:

Thanks for those powerful rules of success

  22. Fancy says:

I Think My strength is that I know I deserve greatness but my challenge is that I think I’m not good enough or capable enough to get there .
I think I’m great at persistence but I have a negative beliefs telling me it’s never going to happen for me .
It’s hard sometimes to be clear , because there’s so much I need and so much I need to do and I question if I can really do it ? I feel tired , lazy , sad but somehow hopeful

  23. Ron says:

Overcoming the fear of failure- starting to believe I am worthy of success! Believing in myself!

  24. Priyantha says:

Thank u. U address the point directly.

  25. Charlotte says:

Reading these 7 things makes me realize how I don’t give up hope and try and try again, yet at the same time (at the age of 67) it is a little more challenging to keep aspiring big, and to maintain and strengthen the best of attitudes.

My greatest strengths are originality of vision and depth of unusual experience. My greatest challenges are having the confidence to share them, managing my time (starting with the important things first), holding to a steady, humorous and uplifted frame of mind.

  26. Michelle Wing says:

Currently I am taking a Coaching for Performance course in my Masters Degree and learning the GROW method. It should be called—“Work on Yourself and Dig to Your Soul” course. I have had more self awareness and growth in the last 8 weeks than ever. I am a bright, beautiful 40 year old women with a life rich in experiences. I am kind spirited and believe that everyone has the right to fabulous life…except me?! WHAT! I am have helping others gain success and stopping myself…LOL it is actually nuts!
There is an emotional self sabotage that I now see. I am stopping myself. I have been a fan of EFT and even took a course in it many years ago, but have not utilized it in a very long time. I will be working on clearing this one out!
What is even more interesting, as I got to the section on 6 and 7, a picture fell of my wall that states “FOLLOW YOUR OWN PATH”. Think it was intentioned…YEP! LOL
    I love lifes surprises:)
    Michelle

  27. Jackie says:

This is great advice. Thanks. I need more self confidence. I set goals and then worry about money to achieve it. I want follow the dream and not give up.

  28. Elinor Babcock says:

    Excellent advice !

  29. Saundra Thurman-Custis says:

Doing the important things first, not the easy things

  30. william mcnaughton says:

Success is to me not based on money or material goals.

” A person is wealthy(successful) in proportion to the things they do not need”

The key to success is simplicity, sincerity, and serenity.

Integrity is our most precious possession.

Creative work is important and enough to live on and to be happy goes with it.

    My greatest strength is empathy.

My greatest challenge is to to remember and to act on the above in a dying world filled with greed and hate….and climate change!

What the above 7 things are good advice as long as material wealth is not the main consideration.

  31. Jan says:

I don’t have any dreams because I don’t deserve them

  32. Diane says:

My biggest problem is with my mind because I have the dreams.

  33. Jessica says:

I don’t deserve success because it feels selfish
I do deserve success because I am the smartest, most determined person I know

The second sentence came easily and quickly. The first one took a second, but as soon as it left my mouth, I realized that I have always sort of operated like I don’t *want* success. I have somehow attached a negative meaning to success and feel like the pursuit of it is selfish, materialistic or otherwise against my nature.

I literally just read this and just discovered this website today, so I know there is lots for me to read and consider and learn. But I just had to comment!

  34. Marsh says:

My biggest mistake was not having a plan B.

I am a writer and expected the Universe to support my success as a writer. 40 years have come and gone and I am now starting to develop a plan B.

  35. Maggie says:

Awesome love this , I like to buy your book

  36. Lori says:

These 7 points reminded me first of all of how I grew up always feeling inadequate, and awkward -. My mother was very critical and still is to this day and always made me feel that I waat I asnt capable of doing anything right and today, I am 52 years old, and my mom will still criticize me. I was always a daydreamer, and to a point – still am! I have survived many obstacles in my life, but even when I had great opportunities to be successful in my career or financially, it s almost as if I allowed myself to fail because deep down I feel that somehow if I obtain great things in my life, it will be taken away from me or that I dont really deserve it. I give more than I receive financially even when i cant afford it, and I dont know if I do that for acceptance self esteem or whatever. Anyways, my greatest strenghts are my ability to always believe that there is “always a light at the end of tunnel”, and somehow, just keep moving forward mentally when failures happen. My biggest downfall right now is that I am a 52 year old widowed woman, still raising my kids and trying to figure out, how I can turn my financial situation around so that I can become financially stable and have a comfortable life, . I am a avery talented singer/entertainer with a day job – administrative assistant which I really dont like . If I could have made a lot of money entertaining that would have been my dream, but my lack of confidence, self esteem, and “not deserving” attitude got me to this point now, where I feel I am struggling and now its too late because i am to old!
I appreciate any words of wisom !!! Cheeres , Lori V.

    • Nick Ortner says:

Hi Lori. Here is another blog post about deconstructing a goal that you might find helpful in getting clarity on what you want and tapping away the blocks and limiting beliefs that come up when you think about reaching that goal: https://www.thetappingsolution.com/blog/deconstructing-a-goal/. We hope you find it helpful and we hope you are able to release the though that it’s too late. We wish you all the best.

  37. Stacey says:

This is a terrific article. I realize I should be doing my writing early, instead of e-mails first.
    Obvious, but just great advice!

    Thanks a lot!

    Stacey

  38. Rita says:

Well, i have been working on some of this issues for a long time now, i had to work up my courage to make some grownd, to advance, and still it{s a lot! thank you for the information and the sopport!

  39. Joy says:

Thank you, Nick Ortner, for always persevering, being a great role model and continuing to reach out to all of us with such valuable literature, video and audio recordings and other such tidbits. It feels like you never give up, which is so awesome! I listened to essentially all of the 2016 tapping world summit and have noticed improvements in my attitude, myself and my life – large and small! Sometimes I tap and sometimes I don’t, but thank you for reminding us to keep tapping in every single email. This is my first time reaching out…and I’m psyched to say that I will be working at Omega Institute when your lovely sister Jessica is there this summer! I’m not sure if you are also going to be there, but I am deeply grateful for everything you both have done, particularly in the production of the tapping world summit. I miss hearing her voice interviewing such fascinating, intelligent people. During the summit, hearing her voice every evening as I listened was so comforting, and I felt I was in really good hands with the two of you. Thank you kindly, and keep tapping!!

  40. Robin says:

I am willing to change and will work on these 7 steps. You have helped me out so much so far and I do have dreams and goals r/t success in all areas of my life, another great arcticle. I am very interested in becoming a tapping practioner as I deeply feel the effects.
    Can”t thank you enough. Robin

    • Nick Ortner says:

We are so glad you enjoyed the post and you are enjoying tapping so much that you are interested in becoming a practitioner! Although The Tapping Solution doesn’t do practitioner training, we do have some recommendations for certification on our website if you are interested. Here is the link: https://thetappingsolution.com/eft-practitioners/. We wish you all the best!

  41. David Anthony says:

Strengths are persistence and ability to wade through “failures”, such as recurring difficulties with returning to previous preferred work; challenges are: dealing with extended redundancy and non cash flow, and considering the possibility of work in which I have no experience, such as on-line marketing, as well as being in default geographical situation, the result of previous major incorrect decisions; also, as a result of many past wrong decisions, (retrospectively), the very act of decision making is, besides, a major challenge

  42. Laura Pennix says:

I think my strongest strength is resilience. Also, I have always viewed mistakes as a learning opportunity. I know where I want to be, and that is exactly where I am taking myself. I need to tap on getting rid of the self limiting belief that I have too much going on to take care of the important things like self-care.

  43. Ann says:

Very profound and right to the point.

  44. Georgeta Fodor says:

My biggest strengths are courage, honesty, hard worker, and my challenges are my physical limitatation, bad car accident 20 years ago. Going forward and try everything, never quit.

  45. Anne says:

Excellent! Most excellent insights. I am going to buy your book! Thank you.

  46. JOYCE says:

I am short of money as I was lead to believe that I was helping 2 lots of people when I had sold my house however they had planned to wrip me off but they are to learn they cannot get away with cheating anyone like that.

A lady is about to find out that the Courts do not muck around and she will pay her IOU’S next time that is for sure.

The family who owe me the rest of my savings are in for a big surprise sooner or later as I do not think they will come for an hours drive to come to the High Court in my area. The problem with them is that they are liars as well as theives however I still have the phone with the spokespersons messages saying how I will get my money paid back in full in2 payments Sept and Dec 2012 but it never happened. Its all on the phone and typed out ready for the Judge in the HIgh Court to read. I am well organised to go to Court with my info all typed out for the Judge to read in a couple of weeks time when I have completed all I can do with the first lady.

My elder son a 40 yr old is successful in business and he told me I wouldn’t get my money back and I told him, “I WILL GET IT ALL BACK – YOU DO NOT KNOW YOUR MOTHER.”

Its taken a while but it will all be over by September or October THIS YEAR. I will be asking the Courts to hurry things along as I have been waiting for this money for over 3 years, shifted, had a big 4 hr back operation and had a walker for almost a year aftewards and still grab a trolley if there is one as I have nerve damage in my legs and they get tired easiy so Tapping will be able to help me with that too. So much that Tapping can do, its going to be a great year for sure and I will be learning a lot more about Tapping.

Meanwhile I am finding it hard to make ends meet and again the Tapping Solution will help me in that regard too I just need to get the wording sorted. Was good to get the diagram of where to tap but how about putting some ideas of what we say to get the best results please it is not clear on your transcript as it has a long way to come from the States. Ha! Ha!
    .
I am a young 67 yr old lady and I am going to win this big Court Case. I should have taken Law and been like Judge Judy I would have thrived on that. Unfortunately my Father died of Cancer when I was not quite 3 he was 40 therefore the opportunities did not come my way after leaving school due to lack of funds. I wish I knew about Tapping then but I do now so my life is going to improve immensley. I will be living to well over 100 yrs old but first I need to do some Tapping to get rid of my acidity, back and leg problems from the operation. Its a shame there is not a qualified person in Tapping closer to where I live.

You have helped me to remember that I am a strong woman and life is going to improve so much with Tapping. Thanking you so much Nick and Jessica

My Best Wishes to both of you Joyce

    • Nick Ortner says:

  47. Shelly says:

So helpful! Thank you. Prioritizing tasks can be so difficult when there are so many things to do each day that all seem IMPORTANT. Tips? Thank you!

  48. MARIE says:

My greatest strengths have been to work at what is necessary and positive daily.
To forget people and put them behind me, what they see, or say about me behind my back, is their business, not mine. My thoughts, ideas and deeds are my priority, at all times. To being more successful is i choose not to risk, i choose intelligently at all times. I do not stress the small things.
If i were to deal out my competitiveness and greed, cheat, steal and lie, like i notice lots of people do, i would be miles ahead.

The reasons i sit back and let it all happen to other people is that i am truly, good and compassionate, and a just person. This behavior keeps me looking young and beautiful, and stress free in all situations.
Besides i Love the person i am, the way i look and feel.

Very ill from Lyme disease for 2 years, lost it all and felt as if I should just die. Not! The Universe has not finished with me. I have 35 years in alternative therapies and began to use them on myself. Things beginning to happen. i must also remember to take care of myself. I overdo and go down. Balance! Thanks Nick and Jessica
