Weight Loss With Tapping

Drill-sergeant-largerCertain times of the year, especially around November & December, we are filled with celebratory foods and drinks that are good for our spirit, but not so good for our waistline.

Come January 1st, the joy and carefree spirit of the holidays leave us. A drill sergeant moves into our head, telling us that the fun is over and it’s time to diet.

This was the pattern I ran for years… and years. A new year equaled a new diet.

Sure, the drill sergeant in my head made me feel awful, but isn’t that what it takes to get results? It took me a long time to realize this approach doesn’t flatten my stomach, but simply flattens my self-worth. You probably know that feeling too.

How many times have you started a new year with a new diet, only to find yourself in the last few weeks of January saying, “I give up! This is too hard. Nothing works for me.” You then feel worse than when you started.

The truth is, long-term weight loss is not possible or sustainable unless we make it pleasurable. And we can’t make it pleasurable unless we tap away our self judgments and critical voice.

Here are a few tips to help you make this year your healthiest year yet!

At the end of this post you’ll find a Tapping Meditation that will help you incorporate all of these tips. 🙂

1. LEAVE THE PATTERN OF PANIC BEHIND

When we begin to panic about our weight, the part of our brain called the amygdala begins to fire off the fight-or-flight response. This creates an overproduction of the hormone called cortisol.

Studies have shown that an overproduction of cortisol increases appetite, sugar cravings, and is directly linked to abdominal obesity. That drill sergeant isn’t helping you, it’s making you fat!

The best way to kick that drill sergeant out of your head is to give it a voice while you tap. It’s really that simple.

When you are able to become aware of you self-criticism and tap while speaking it to yourself, you’ll find that you can hear those words without feeling the physical sensation of anxiety. From that place, you can choose a more loving thought and action that supports you.

2. FORGIVE YOURSELF

So your biggest arm workout this holiday season was opening a bottle of wine?

The past is in the past. You can always learn healthier recipes and strategies to help support your body during the holidays.

Beating yourself up over your past actions doesn’t prevent them from happening again, it simply robs you of the power in the present moment to make a change.

Be gentle with yourself. Forgive.

3. FALL IN LOVE WITH THE JOURNEY

happy-with-the-processIf we focus on a strict goal with some made up deadline, we then try to panic ourselves there by eating in a manner that’s restrictive and lacks joy.

Unpleasurable equals unsustainable.

For real, lasting weight loss, we need to fall in love with the journey because health isn’t a destination, but a decision we make every moment.

This isn’t really about a weight loss goal. This is about you showing up as your best self.

It’s about eating foods that you love and help you thrive. It’s about moving your body because when there is movement in your body, there is movement in your life. It’s about taking care of yourself because you have a deep appreciation for the amazing person you are.

Once we fall in love with this process, the results are better than we could have imagined!

    I read your book on tapping and weight-loss. It’s frightening when so many things resonate with you when you read something. Thank you for writing about your struggles and successes. I decided to write a manifesto of sorts based on what you wrote.

    I’m DONE.
    I’m done thinking that I am overweight.
    I’m done wishing that I will be happier, better… if I lose weight.
    I’m done not accepting who I am.
    I’m done with people who used to tell me, you have such a pretty face but…
    I’m done binge dieting.
    I’m done with all the negative crap I tell myself.

    Instead:
    I choose to accept myself, no matter what size I am.
    I choose to love myself.
    I choose to speak kindly and encourage myself.
    I choose to let this crap go.
    I choose to be healthy.
    I choose to find an exercise that I enjoy.
    I choose to believe people when complimented.
    I choose to be strong.
    I choose me.

I am a water aerobics instructor and many of my students are overweight and in pain due to hip, back or knee problems. This mediation is profoundly calming and affirming.     This meditation is a wonderful gift for feeling better. However, I would feel even better if there was a reference to the RESULTS of a number of people using this to achieve lasting weight loss. I’ve spent a lot of money feeling better but am still 30 lbs over my best health weight.

    Thanks, Jessica, this was a wonderful “refresher.” I participated in your Weight Loss Program over the summer and have been doing quite well. Although I was one of those who did not see immediate results, there was a dramatic change in my approach to weight loss. Your program ended in mid-August and I started a yoga program in early September which continues today. About mid-September I became more conscious of what I was eating and what my relationship to food was in general. Since then, I have lost 12 lbs of my 20 lb goal in a relatively easy way, no high stress or pressure at all. Although the holidays were challenging, I’m confident that I can lose the next 8 by continuing my healthy approach to living. Thank you for your program, it was incredibly helpful to approach the “problem” in an entirely new way.

    Did the tapping and within moments some stress that had been in my left ankle for five years popped up again. Everytime I tap and a shift occurs, I start to yawn, so I was yawning quite a bit during this tapping session. The ankle stress quieted down and I’ll be drinking a lot of water today in addition to having home-made turkey soup for lunch and eating some tangerines this afternoon. Thanks, Jessica.

    I have done tapping before, but never have I felt like this. I could feel the energy thru out my body and it felt good. Since I do therapeutic touch, I see colors and visions when I do TT. I saw brilliant yellows and blues, which wnen I do TT means it working well. I feel so good since I did this tapping.

    I try to be open minded about learning/exploring new things. What this means however, is that the mind is so open, that it looks at both ends of the spectrum. Meaning I’ll look at the pros and cons. With that said, this technique reminds me of the game my brother would play with me. The ‘name 10 chocolate bars’ game as he tapped on my forehead. I mean no disrespect, I am simply challenging this whole theory and would like to see clinical proof that this does in fact work.

    Can anyone here elaborate on their “it really works!” Comments by explaining exactly how it ‘worked’? Again, I mean no disrespect I just want irrefutable evidence that it does ‘work’. Can someone chime in please? I am sincerely interested in purchasing this product, but don’t want to throw money away on gimmicks.

    Thank you Jessica. I have to say that you have been gifted with the perfect voice for the work you are doing. Although I am not trying to lose weight, I found this helpful in making healthy eating choices a more pleasurable experience. I used to workout on a regular basis and for various reasons have let that slide.
