Wayne Dyer Woke Me Up This Morning…

Written by: Nick Ortner

I’m pretty sure Wayne Dyer woke me up at 5 a.m. this morning…

The last couple of months, with a newborn in the house, it’s been our daughter June waking me up, but today was different. Two days after Wayne’s passing, I feel his influence in my life more strongly than I ever have before.

So as I found myself stirring at 5 a.m., I could hear Wayne’s voice, quoting Rumi:

“The breezes at dawn have secrets to tell you

Don’t go back to sleep!

You must ask for what you really want.

Don’t go back to sleep!

People are going back and forth across the doorsill where the two worlds touch,

The door is round and open

Don’t go back to sleep!”

After a bit of silent protesting (but Wayne, sleep is precious these days…5am???), I listened to the message and got up. And now I sit here joining you.

And I sit here joining you in another of Wayne’s beloved practices: Writing. Wayne penned all his books by hand, writing them out on yellow sheets of paper, a practice which while incredible and admirable, I will politely decline to partake of this morning. The results of that would be illegible handwriting that never saw the light of day, and a left hand smudged with ink. 🙂

But in honor of Wayne, I wake at dawn (it’s actually pitch black out right now, overshot it a bit… oops), and I write.

I thought all day yesterday about how Wayne would want to be remembered, and while I can’t say for sure, I’m quite certain that he would want nothing more than but for us to commune once again with his millions of wise words. He would want us to love more deeply, to give more freely, to forgive more fully.

So yesterday I loaded my iPod back up with all the amazing lectures of his that I’ve heard again and again and again and asked, “What do you have to share with me today Wayne?”

I was struck as I listened to him yesterday and this morning, that this is a man, who in his passing, TRULY lives on. We often say that about those we love, and it’s true, they live on in our memories, in our hearts and with Wayne, he lives on in the legacy of thinking he left behind.

So today, as you go about your day, I invite you to practice just one of the things he often talked about:

Making Conscious Contact

This idea can mean different things to different people. It can be religious, or secular. It can be profound, in deep meditation or it can be simple, sitting with eyes closed for 30 seconds at a traffic light as you commute to work (as Wayne joked, there’s always someone behind you kind enough to let you know the light has turned- lol!)

So today- Make Conscious Contact.

Find one moment, find ten, where you pause, you breathe and you connect to the deepest part of who you are. Personally, when I do this I pay attention for, and wait for that moment of “connection”.

It feels like something is syncing up, like there’s a greater awareness, breathing slows down, perhaps you feel a tingle in your spine, perhaps some love in your heart. It’s a moment when you know you are closer to the divine, to your true nature than you were the moment before.

Even now, as you’re reading this, you have the opportunity, don’t let it pass, to take even 10 seconds to make conscious contact.
Do it. Do it for yourself. Do it for your family. Do it for the world.

Do it for Wayne. 😉

Much love!

P.S. Share with me below, what does making conscious contact mean to you? Did you actually do it just now? 🙂 What happened?

Thank you, Nick, for the suggestion to take 10 seconds to connect. I definitely felt the connection with Wayne. I coud write so muh but others have said most of it. What I experienced in my communication with Wayne this time was that he had not been able to complete his mission. There was one thing that he felt he had wanted to do and had not yet achieved it. Unfortunately I was unable to get what it was, but I got that he will achieve it through someone he was connected with here. He was not upset about not achieving it, but was confident that it would be achieved.
The feeling of love which he exuded, was, I believe, the love of the entire universe. God, or however one chooses to define that which he called Source. I am a care giver for a husband with Alzheimers and needed help with patience and allowance. Reconnecting with Wayne has given me the help I needed

Wayne’ passing was very hard to take. He is so missed. I learned so much…
But I know his presence will always be there, among us, in his writings, talks and meditations…

I was so happy to read this, I will truly miss him. I have some of his earlier dvd’s and one of his latest, but after reading your note I began to find some happiness. James will be remembered his legacy will continue and when we read his words they will remind us of who we are and our connection with one and another.Let us remember that he is still with us in spirit and some of us will still hear his words

  6. Pam says:

i am truly saddened to have lost a Light such as Wayne. After three close losses this last year (father, mother-in-law, and a best friend), I think I finally have come to understand what passing is all about. They are all still close at hand (or close at heart) and their presence (or memory) never really leaves–they become a part of you. Thank you, Wayne for sharing your essence–and to quote e.e.cummings—I carry your heart (I carry it in my heart).
Your kindness and wisdom continues to live– Soar on.

I always felt so full of love when remembering Dr. Wayne and his touching words. I just wanted to thank you, Nick Ortner, for sharing this with us today. What i felt when making conscious contact was gratitude. Gratitude for what Dr. Wayne has done for us all and what you have done for us all. Dr. Wayne will always stay in our hearts, and i believe that he will have a wonderful “after-life”. God bless you.

  8. Frederick Jackson says:

Wayne would be the first to state his ordinary -ness.. Like Jesus of Nazareth “as I go you go also. Death has no sting, nor victory. Ascension into the Light is an experience we have done often. Authentic beingness is the gift of his legacy. Demonstrating the I AM Presence.

  9. Nancy Bonnevier says:

Conscious contact for me is going to that place where my energy connects with the peace and energy of the universe – of all that is. It is like being clearly present yet disembodied at the same time. Energy tingles and flows through my body (Reiki). As a therapist I often share this meditative state with clients and I can read their energy and help them connect.

  10. Lynne Berger says:

Thank you Nick for sharing your experience! I am so grateful, as I am very overwhelmed by Dr. Wayne’s impact on the world; it’s incredible to feel so close to him… There are no words adequate enough to describe how much his words, writings, appearances have shaped me life for decades. I am also grateful for the loving kindness he has shared with so many…It offers renewed hope for the world!

I too feel his presence strongly and believe he is already a very special guardian angel directing his light on those still here, offering peace, comfort and solace as well as gentle reminders about the extraordinary powers of love. May you rest in peace, Wayne Dyer, secure in the knowledge that your work will not only live on, but grow in a world on the brink of transition. Kudos to a life well lived on this plane, and certainly in the one beyond. Thank you!!!

  11. Leeanne says:

I am in constant conscious contact, my awareness of the contact pulsates like my beating heart.

Yes I did it just now after reading your words about Wayne Dyer. I only closed my eyes for thirty seconds and felt peaceful. I am so grateful for his wisdom and for your kind words. Thank you Nick!

Yes, I just did it! and try to do it often, but I can find myself “asleep” for many hours at a time, Always feels good to wake up and become conscious again if even only for a short while. It’s very recharging. Emails like this help, so thank you.

  15. Stacy Vandervort says:

Living in the present moment is so important to enjoy our full potential. Dr. Dyer & you both have that spot on. I worked at that by hitting the yoga mat this morning. After stretching I try & be still and listen. When becoming more attentive to the now I always am encouraged to continue to work on myself mind, body & spirit. It helps to bring it all together and stay centered.
Thank you for sharing your touching experience.

  16. Madelyn says:

Thank you for this posting…it was lovely. Yes, I did take a few minutes to try to “connect”…I am sitting in my bed, the sun is shinning through my lace curtains and as I sat, with eyes closed, thanking Wayne for all he has given me over the years through his books, his speaking, his postings, clouds passed over the sun…several times…so that a light show was going on in my room that I witnessed through my eyelids! Eyes opened, the sun is back.

Odd though this may sound, as I did this, during this time of peaceful contemplation, I felt I was given a direction to do some research on his writings to find what he did to overcome some of his own personal problems…some that I am dealing with now…Did we connect? I don’t know, but it was a peaceful few minutes….and, I am going to start my research, as directed…(smiles).

I witnessed his own growth through the years, and I feel that he truly became one of the lights of this world that will continue on…I miss him.

Thanks, for sharing this, Nick. I love that poem– it brings tears to my eyes. I can imagine Wayne’s voice reciting it. Thank you, Wayne Dyer.

  19. Francie Rossi says:

I am so happy to see this! I’ve been up since 4:50. I was completely shocked when I read the news of Wayne’s passing last week!! I grew up w/ his books & positive energy!
I loved the ‘Tapping’ Interview/ session you had w/ Wayne.
I am so grateful for you carrying the message of positivity & hope & light!

Yes, Wayne lives on in all that he loved and all those that loved him!

  20. Cathy B, deepest Cambridgeshire, England says:

I was chatting to a friend about how marvellous he was and we agreed to do his new I Am Light video course (which I bought some time ago but didn’t have sufficient wifi connection in my village for until last week). My friend had somehow not come across Wayne’s work as yet – she tends to focus on women’s words maybe forgetting that genderness doesn’t matter tenderness does. This conversation was going in in a quiet corner (we love those) of a local pub at probably the exact moment that Wayne passed – how’s that for synchronicity! Wayne has been waking me up too at around dawn since his passing – I’ve been following his powerful ‘ah morning meditation’ – 20 minutes of connection – I am gorgeously grateful. Perhaps his books and YouTube videos and humble wisdom have the power to wake us all up. What a blessed legacy. I am joining the crowded field in gratitude for him and all his good (only an ‘oh!’ away from God) works.

  21. Christine Covington says:

I felt my heart jump and then a warm sensation . I felt the love. I’m reminded of the words I wrote in a song for my son when he passed away. “Fly away…in my heart your love will stay…Rest in peace….take my love into eternity.”

From all the comments I read I know that Wayne is not only in the place of love but is beaming love to all of us and feeling our love beaming back to him. We are all so grateful for the journey he shared with us that helped us grow and touch parts of ourselves we didn’t know we had.

The first thing I saw when I turned on My computer was your article. The next thing I saw when I closed my eyes was a dream I had 20 years ago that was so vivid but forgotten until now. It was beautiful but I never fully understood the meaning of it before. I was forever asking why wanting to know more. Now I have stopped asking why or even trying to understand how this all works. I just say show me more, please, and the rest falls into place. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for reminding me it only takes a moment to reach the most important place I will be all day…………………If you read this far I would like to share one of the little tricks I devised that has made my life so much easier. I don’t like making decisions because I am not always sure if it’s me or my intuition ( the universe, God, call it what you like) making them so I invented a way to be sure. You can only ask a yes or no so I started by asking a question I know the answer to like do I love my kids, then I waited for a feeling in my body. A pendulum works for some but my body is always with me and none knows I am doing it. I got a feeling in my throat so that meant a YES. Then I asked a question I was sure would get a no. The feeling came in my gut. That meant NO. You can use any body part but I’d forget if left arm was yes or no so I just went with top half of my body meant yes, bottom half no. My throat is more sensitive so I feel it easier. One day I burst out laughing when I asked a question and burped. Now I’d walk 100 miles at midnight in a thunder storm if I burp because I know I’d find something like a million bucks in a garbage bag on the side of the road which I’d miss if I was driving. And if I fart you won’t get me to move for a million bucks! 20 years on and I have NEVER gotten a wrong answer, and when I ignored it because I thought I knew better I always regretted it. PS. Sometimes I get no answer at all and then I know I am asking the wrong question. I have only ever shared these “tricks” with my friends because I thought no one else would understand, but I felt compelled ( Wayne?) to tell this story today. I hope this helps make your life easier with the not always easy task of decision making. May Ho’oponopono bless your lives as well. Love from Leiza.

Thank you for your thoughts this day, and thank you for saying Do It Now.. I have let the rhythm of life get me off track. I had the blessing of spending three days in Maui with Wayne, beyond amazing. Thanks again

  25. Caitlin says:

I did just do it now and I felt Wayne telling me, “It’s okay, it’s okay”

  26. Judith Sansweet says:

A beautiful piece of writing, Nick; it truly lets so many be aware of the ability to “connect” with those who have crossed over so that we can continue to benefit and grow forward with the love and wisdom Wayne so generously shares.

  27. Kathryn says:

Realizing that I am in this world but not of it. Knowing this is the dream reality; my soul on a journey.

  28. Kyra Wright says:

I just felt relief……a peace……a weight off my shoulders….a tenderness…a lightness….a warm fuzzy…thank you…….thank you for the reminder that this is all there for the pausing and connecting with the true and higher self…with all that is…..with true love….connection ….I get the same feeling when I am kind to someone…considerate…show empathy…a helping hand….a smile…an ear….when I am kind to myself….not so hard… not so condemning…I let go and let light replace the fear….it’s a sweet fragrance of peace

  29. Jennifer legacy says:

Hi I did this today quite a few times without even realizing it.
I work outside as a food vendor. So as I’m waiting for customers to show up in just sit in my chair. But I would just listen to the cars drive by, feel the wind blowing. I close my eyes from time to.time just sit there and listen to.all different sounds and feeling the breeze. I’m lucky to because in between customers I can read. Guess whose book I’m reading 🙂 change your thoughts, change your life! His words are so powerful. Wayne said there’s no such thing as a coincidence.
When I was feeling down one day I stumbled across him on you tube. I watch ” I am light” and from then on I’ve been hooked on him. I watched his video The shift the other night. And it was incredible!

  30. barbara says:

thnkyou Nick, thank you Wayne, to be reminded of taking that “pause” to connect with the sacred, divine makes such a difference in decisions, in relationships, in everything: I feel grateful for such sweet souls, such gifts:)

RE: Making “Conscious Contact” every morning… I have found something that has helped me enormously in the situation I am in. I am a wife and mother but I was listening to a lecture for men last year that was a teaching on biblical principles of finance and life.

At the end, the speaker encouraged the men to find an accountability partner to share their struggles with, but also he strongly encouraged them to read the “The Psalms of the Day” from the Bible each morning.

So, if a person reads the Psalm of the Day, (i.e., if today is the 15th of the month, you read Psalm 15) and then adds and keeps adding 30 to that number to read Psalm 45, 75, 105, and 135, in 30 days they will have read all 150 of the chapters. (It only takes about 15-20 minutes per day.)

    * For people going through heartbreaking difficulties, I highly recommend reading them out loud.

I am always amazed at the content. Day after day, these chapters show that God knows exactly what I am going through and He repeatedly promises to vindicate me before those who are attacking and falsely accusing me. The PotDs are amazingly insightful because most were written by David before he was king and during the 10+ years he was being stalked by King Saul who was using his army to try to kill David.

    * I’ve been doing this on a daily basis only since January, but as bad as my situation is, this one activity has truly saved my sanity and I think it is in the process of saving my marriage.

** If there’s anyone who is about to give up and “check out,” please (PLEASE!) just TRY this process for just one month. I think you will be amazed!

P.S. Some people add on one chapter from Proverbs each day because there are only a total of 31 chapters in that book and they are absolutely loaded with truth and wisdom.

I did do it! It takes you in to your soul but also connects you with the whole universe of one. I find it very calming. Thank you Nick for this reminder.

  33. Virginia says:

Conscious contact to me means making a point of greeting the person you walk by while on a walk and if you have the opportunity to ask how they are, even better! Genuinely greeting the person at the cash register or where ever you are given interaction with someone. Perhaps a smile when the situation allows to do so. Sharing love and light even when experiencing challenges….seems to bring us back to wholeness.

Thank you Nick for sharing your feelings and thoughts and the links, I have found it so comforting and really appreciate it. It is so wonderful to be a part of our loving community. My heart joins with everyone with love. Wayne’s message will live on forever!

  34. Jude says:

    So Profound…

He (Wayne Dyer) would want us to Love More Deeply, to Give More Freely, to Forgive More Fully.

That would change the world! I loved your article. Thanks!

I breathed deeply, thought of my daughter and sent her Love and Light !

Wayne Dyer changed my perception of reality with his first book ” Your Erroneous Zones” and taught me many things from that moment onwards.

  38. Margaret says:

I was shocked at the passing of the beloved Dr.Wayne Dyer, in saying that, I did not realise the sickness that he had. But since then I have had a profound feeling & acknowledgement of what he did in life. I am & will be following his works & writings from now on. I have just seen his film The Shift. it was amazing & certainly had messages for many to understand. I have felt for sometime now that there was a lot missing in my life. (I am a carer for my husband & life gets pretty fragile at times with both of us} BUT his teachings will help me at those times of need. Thank you Nick for this lovely invite to relate to you my intentions. Can you possibly advise a book of his that I should perhaps read firstly ?… sending this with great respect. I am Margaret Elizabeth Vincent .

  39. Monique Laughlin says:

Wayne Dyer has been very much with me as I am reading and practicing the material in his last book, “Wishes Fulfilled” and listening to his tape that he created to go with this book. I had thought that this book is the ultimate…….how could he possibly do any thing grater! And he will not need to, on this plane anyway. I heard him in person many years ago, in his early presentations and have read all of his books. I have so appreciated seeing him and listening to him each year when he helped with raising money for Public Television. He will be greatly missed and yet never missed as he lives on. Thank you Nick for this opportunity.

  40. Marje says:

When making conscious contact, it is a peace that passes all understanding! If I had one wish, it would be for the lonely to know they are never alone! For the poor to know they are more magnificent than the tallest mountain, . . . and a smile in the most inappropriate places could change a life! This is what conscious contact means to me . . . and I thank God for every moment I get to be alone and feel the presence of my creator . . . .

  41. Rev. Dr. Don Warford says:

Thank you Nick. I have had so many wonderful aha moments reading Wayne’s books and listening to his presentations. He brought me to a new, higher plateau of God consciousness and the understanding of my personal relationship with that glorious “intention”. I never met Dr. Wayne in person, yet I have a very personal relationship with him through Spirit reality. That spirit connection still exists and will continue to grow us all as we simply take the time to connect. Dr. Wayne still exists in a different reality, a much closer, freer reality than we experienced while he was in his earth body. So, it doesn’t surprise me to hear you say you heard his voice or felt his presence. Keep tuned in for more, deeper, richer enlightenment from Dr. Wayne Dyer.

  42. Mary Jo Hedges says:

Thanks Nick for sharing your experience and for bringing a message from Wayne including the fabulous quote from Rumi. I too like so many people around the world cherish Wayne’s teachings. He will continue to live on in our hearts always. Namaste

  43. Kathleen says:

Nick, I am speechless to fully explain what you and others are also sharing. Wayne ‘came’ to me yesterday and encouraged me to continue my writing. (I also write by hand) It was in a timeless moment not measured in minutes. It wasn’t something ‘magical’ as it felt purely natural. And after this experience, I went outside where a mourning dove’s feather fell directly in front of me from the sky! I have no doubt about Wayne Dyer continuing his work from that ‘place’ that he taught us all about. He also taught us how to receive his lessons, it begins with our conscious contact* Thank You Nick, you have delivered his message well! And I thank all of you who are sharing your expressions and experiences. ~God Bless

  44. Laurie Lee says:

I, too, awoke very early this morning, and was so wide-eyed awake I knew it was crazy to think of going back to sleep. While I was not overcome with the essence of Wayne Dyer being the cause of waking me, I did immediately remember him quoting that Rumi saying and instructing us not to ignore the universe if it was your time to arise. I lay there consciously thinking through many things I am grateful for, one of which was Dr. Dyer himself. Then I arose and re-read his entire book “Getting in the Gap”. So our mornings were very similar today, Nick, as I feel certain were millions of others. By the way, I am grateful for Nick Ortner, too, and the power of tapping!

  45. Kathy B. says:

You asked, “What does making conscious contact mean to you?” It’s standing in quiet oneness even when the world around you spins in chaos. It’s being still in the innermost part of your being, the quiet zone, amidst the chatter of the world that surrounds you. It’s breathing and emanating and radiating the very essence of holy oneness into the elements and molecules merely by your awareness and holding of this contact within you. It’s a state of being that influences the very atmosphere around you and has the potential to change the physical by just your abiding consciously in that contact. The more you walk in it, the more you’ll see it’s influence on your physical realm. It is wholeness at its essence.
The world not only hungers for this, but is also greatly in need of the supernatural infusion of this contact into our outer world. The more we reside in it, the more we will witness its life-altering infusion of the miraculous power and abilities of the realm of God that exists wtihin every individual. As we learn to let go of this outer realm’s solutions and begin to contact and tap into the infinite realm of this sacred oneness within us, only then will we begin to change this world. It will not happen with outward solutions; more laws, more regulations, more “to-do’s;” but rather only with the introduction and the infusion of those powers that are latent within each of us and simply awaiting our tapping into. Einstein said, “You cannot solve a problem with the same consciousness that created it.” We’re trying to find solutions with THIS realm’s thinking, with the same kind of thinking that created the problems to begin with, and it’s not going to work.
We must begin to shift our thinking into the unseen realm where the supernatural and the miraculous are accessable. All our outward “fixes” have done little to change the world, and in fact, have oftentimes caused more confusion and chaos by putting further “to-do’s” on our outward lists. We are entering an era where only that which ignites the HEART is going to produce the miraculous solutions and supernatural capabilities. We hunger to HEAR this. We yearn to abide and reside in this conscious contact. We have allowed the ridicules, the intimidations, and the judgments of ourselves and others to pull us back into this realm’s thinking, instead of learning to abide in this supernatural and power-filled consciousness. And so oftentimes, we succumb to THIS realm’s thinking rather than press through with our heart and stay in that conscious contact of the realm of God within us all. THIS is the contact that will change the world. THIS is the consciousness that will bring heaven back into earth. THIS is what the world hungers for. The more we walk in it, the more we will see it. THIS is what making conscious contact means to me…. it is the realm that resides in the very essence of our physical being waiting to be tapped into and manifested into a confused and hurting outer world.

  46. Jennifer says:

Thanks you, Nick, for such a beautiful article and a wonderful eulogy to Wayne Dyer, he will be greatly missed, but as you said he has left such a remarkable legacy, wow ! It’s wonderful to hear the reminders of some of Wayne’s stories and the quote from Rumi so apt !! Thanks again your words filled my heart.

  47. Joan says:

    Hello Nick,

Thank you that was inspiring, yes I did take 10 seconds and took a deep breath and felt peace within, Wayne’s book Inspiration your ultimate calling, is one of my favourite books, that started me on a journey of change. For the last 3 years i have started waking up early and starting my day with prayer, with exercise.

Thank you for your message today and also thank you for all your Tapping Exercises. God Bless you and your family.

It is because of Wayne, Marianne Williamson, Louise Hay that someday I too hope to become a motivational speaker.

  48. Vibeke Hermann says:

I’ve been following you and Loise Hay for some time now and therefore I have heard about this great man. Today I saw “The Shift” – that was really 2 hours that was SO good for me! Thank you . I had to stop several times to feel for my self the conscious connection to the divine. Everything is okay . <3

  49. Glory says:

Nick, it’s funny you are writing this, because every time I wake up at 4ish, I think of Wayne Dyer and how he says there’s a reason you are awake. This past Sunday morning around 4ish, I woke up with so many ideas swirling around in my head and thought of getting out of bed and writing but I didn’t. The fact that you write this is a reminder to listen next time and connect if just for a few moments. I too am happy Dr. Wayne Dyer left us so many gifts.

  50. Claudette says:

I felt the connection, Tears fill my eyes when I’m deeply touched by anyone or anything. I’m open to the creative Person that I know as God and His handiwork overwhelms me. Wayne is part of His handiwork, and he will live on in his teachings,

Thanks for the link to the movie, Wayne’s concepts of who we really are and how our lives impact each other helps to bring clarity to my life’s purpose.
