Release Chronic Stress with EFT

Why not all stress (and stress relief) is created equal.

Did you know that some stress is actually good for you? In the right amounts, stress can improve brain function, make you more creative, help you get fit, lower your risk of breast cancer, Alzheimer’s, and lots more.

It’s chronic stress—the “stress overload” you feel day in, day out—that’s silently but systematically sabotaging your health and well-being.

But here’s the thing. You’re smart. You exercise, get your 7 hours, do deep breathing, yoga, meditation. You’ve even logged hours on the couch (the therapist’s couch!), trying to get to the “root” of your stress.

So what gives?

The Answer: Like stress, not all stress relief is created equal.

Stress isn’t just in your head. Stress is also physical. (There’s a load of scientific research proving this, by the way.)

Until stress is fully released, it stays lodged in your body, in your cells, running rampant, putting your health at risk.

Here’s how stress damages your health (and your life, relationships, waistline, and more) in 13 sad steps:

1. You think about something stressful—work, money, relationships, family, whatever’s bothering you.

2. Your amygdala (in your mid-brain) senses danger.

3. Your amygdala helps to initiate your body’s fight-or-flight response to stress.

4. In “fight or flight”, your body releases adrenaline and the “stress hormone” cortisol, diverts blood away from your digestive tract, leaving you less able to digest food and absorb nutrients AND more likely to gain weight.

5. In this physiological “crisis mode,” you’re more vulnerable to pain—from chronic illness, arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraines, stomach upset, and more.

6. In this state of heightened physiological “alert”, your brain’s creative center is deemed “non-essential” and shuts down. Down goes your problem solving, your creative skills, your intuition.

7. You feel increasingly irritable, isolated, and impatient. Your relationships suffer.

8. Stress affects your sleep. Your metabolism slows.

9. Your body secretes even more cortisol, wreaking more havoc on your digestion (and waistline), increasing your blood pressure, lowering your immune response.

10. After releasing too much cortisol for too long, your body goes into “adrenal fatigue.” You feel depleted, exhausted, and depressed.

11. You no longer have the energy to adhere to your exercise routine, your healthy eating, meditation, yoga. Migraines, insomnia, stress-related hair loss, chronic pain, and any number of other issues become regular parts of your life.

12. Battling low energy, you can hardly focus at work, and elsewhere. Your relationships suffer.

13. Your depression deepens. You (and your body) are STRESSED OUT.

NO debate here. Exercise is crucial for a healthy lifestyle. The reality: Yoga and meditation provide significant stress relief and other benefits that yield significant results in weeks or months with regular, frequent practice. However, many who try meditation give up too soon because they feel it’s “not working.”

What about psychotherapy?

Does “talk” therapy provide lasting stress relief?

A study performed by Dr. Dawson Church, Ph.D. and Dr. David Feinstein, Ph.D., measured cortisol levels before and after treatment.

Research on Chronic Stress83 participants were divided into 3 groups: the 1st group received an hour of Tapping, a practice that combines “talk” therapy with acupressure treatments; the 2nd group received an hour of psychotherapy (“talk” therapy); the 3rd group (control group) received no treatment.

Results: The 1st group demonstrated a 24% decrease in cortisol levels; the 2nd and 3rd groups showed no change in cortisol levels.

The reality: Psychotherapy alone relieves stress, but over a long period of time. Unfortunately, the immediate benefits of psychotherapy don’t register in your body where excessive amounts of the “stress hormone” cortisol still run rampant, putting your health at risk.

    The article it’s very interesting and it goes in the same way that the answers that I’m looking for. Obviously stress is affecting me. Most of all, about work and why I’m doing what I do; because at the moment, I can`t get what I want. Anxiety it’s my big problem. All my life I’ve been interested to improve my style life. So I always read lot of spiritual books, do therapy when I need it, I`ve started doing yoga, and recently I’ve discovered the tapping solution. I’m just starting to find out about this technique. Thanks for this opportunity for learning more about it.

    Just to say thank you to Nick and to everyone who left their comments. I’ve been chronically stressed since the early age due to adverse childhood and several accidents. I’m now nearly 40 and have been in talking therapies since 17. Recently I met a renown psychotherapist and author who taught me tapping techniques and guided through different sequences. He practises other Energy Psychology methods, too. The result of his interventions were incredible. Yet I have a feeling they may not last and bring about a permanent change. I don’t know, I’m new to it and sceptical after so many years of mostly unsuccessful therapies. But I want to be hopeful and I practise tapping on my own, although it works much better with him. My chronic stress turned to chronic pain and I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia after many years of struggling with pain, depression, IBS, headaches and insomnia. Recently when I felt for a moment no pain and no stress, I realised this could and should be a default state, not a privileged moment of bliss, not an exceptional circumstance. I wish health and happiness to all here and thank you Nick for your emails and generosity in spreading the news about tapping.

    Seeing the actual steps of chronic stress broken down like that definitely makes me aware of how much my daily life is effected by stress. I am have been tapping for only a few weeks and I can feel release of anxiety after 5-10 min. I will continue to tap and read more about EFT.     I recently tapped through a topic with Nick called ” I feel like parts of me are broken”, WOW what a powerful, healing experience that was!     I like the fact that there are studies that show the positive effects. Many people doubt EFT. When I try to explain Tapping to friends and others I get this puzzled look coming back at me as if they are thinking I have really lost my mind now.
    I have found that the biggest change for me is that when I tap one day then the next day or even immediately after I feel like I have a fresh slate. My life is busy and can be quite stressful. My body does not hold the stress, building tension and other symptoms like before.

    Dear Nick and colleagues!

    I agree with all of the content above , it always is an eye opener when you read and confirm what you had in your mind . I’m so glad I eventually decided to check on what is on offer.What a difference “tapping” does make , on your mind, mood ,health, physical well being and several others.

    Thank you so much , I can not stress the difference I feel after checking out your video’s, and doing the tapping physically, tremendous outcome. I should actually smack myself on the head for not doing it way back. It would have made such a great difference in several areas of my life , but I’m glad I decided to give it a try, it really works!!!!!!

    Keep it up, certainly to carry on tapping as long as I am able to do it.

    Indeed the stress in which I lived a lot of years gave me very bad things șike Hashimoto thyroid problems, tahicardy, a very bad gastrite with GERD, All these deases are due to the stress. I try to tappe and meditate now, but it is very difficault to obtain a better health now, after such a lot of years. Thank you, Maria

    Always have good results w/tapping w/someone else!

    Highly stressed due to helping friends financially while I, myself, am disabled & no one can pay me back the $ they owe! To the tune of $10K! Now I’m am forced to move & have depression for which I can take nothing as it messes w/my heart, have high credit card debt due to not having the $ I lent out & may have to go bankrupt! I am completely overwhelmed almost everyday & have no one to help–all close family is passed & funny how when friends owe you, they avoid you like the plague! Have had great anxiety over brother trying to kill me as a preteen & never had therapy for it as my parents didn’t know this. Dr Mona Lisa Schultz told me last year I absolutely CANNOT, CANNOT, CANNOT continue to live w/the stress in my body caused by that event! Tapping has helped somewhat w/this! And, at least w/tapping I’m still playing this game of life…so far! However, the idea of being homeless w/my cat might send me to a bridge! TY for your help! I hope to see a person who wants to help me for free at this time so I can tap w/her! Thank God! And TY, Nick!

    “Fight or flight” began for me the moment I was born. I was given up at birth and was never adopted. Making sure others know that even children given up for adoption “matter”. It can be stressful defending one’s “being-ness”. Possessing low self’esteem can also be very stressful (as I discovered later on in life). Fortunately, I was always spiritual and I was intuitive enough to recognize that I was responsible for how the world viewed me. I’ve been “working” on myself for 40 years and have had “breakthroughs” in most areas of my life. It’s time for me to let go of things I’ve been dealing with for many years. Stress is one of them. Stress has become a part of my DNA. Thanks to tapping my blood pressure has become “normal” after many years of medication. I have been able to decrease my daily medicine intake from 7 to 6 pills a day. I forgot to mention that I am the single parent of 3. Need I say more. Thank goodness for tapping.

    Most of my life has been a fight or flight syndrom . At one time age 25 I weighed 125 felt happy & healthy. Then I started a job that was very stressful. The pounds came on slowly at first then as I aged & became depressed over the years of constant stress I eventually weighed at my highest 298 pounds. Stress for where the money will come from to pay the bills, stress & anger while my boss gave more credit to those who did not deserve credit ( they never paid their bills they almost bankrupted the company.after my boss had a stroke my sister & I bought the company & were allowed to pay over several years & actually with the help of a few good companies had 10 years of great business. Although a few cagy customers took advantage of our kindness & naivety & gave us false information that prevented us from collecting our $$$ . They even went personally bankrupt as well as corporate bankrupt. Till now where I am working at now my sole business & am a cash & carry business barely making ends meet. Yet one time 3 years ago I was listening to the tapping world summet & tapping every day & in the middle of our slowest season I had a large sale that helped me through a difficult winter. I was receptive to the universe sending business my way.thank you for that summit.
    I need to drop the stress again as my health needs a drop in cortisol & I need to get back to a healthy 125 pounds. My life needs me to get back in the living & I need to start tapping everyday as I believe it does help me to help myself.& one day perhaps help others.

    I know I have Chronic stress. I’ve been having Jin Sin Juhitsu treatment for over a year which has been wonderful and has kept me sane. I have chronic Digestive problems. Have had an endoscopy and colon Scopia and a scan. Nothing is seriously wrong I’m told by consultant. It’s a functional problem. I recently went to visit an Ostepath. I know I’m lactose intolerant, have been for about 28 years. I decided to go lactose & gluten free but after 3 days I discovered I must be Fructose intolerant too. After eating a pear an having a cup of tea with a sweetener, my stomach just blew up. I went lactose , fructose and gluten free for 3 whole weeks. This made me miserable and depressed and reduced me to tears only eating meat, fish and potatoes and rice. Osteopath told me that after the work he had done on my spine, I should have seen an improvement. He told me that it’s nothing to do with the food that I eat and that its a neurological problem!!!! Yes I know it’s stress. I’m trying to take some time out. I need to give myself at least one if not two days off a week. I’ve been going to the Spa for the last 3 weeks on a Tuesday then I have my Jin Si Juhitsu treatment and then I have the night off work. My body feels so relaxed that i have no go in me come the evening. This actually makes me Stop. Where as I’d normally still be on he go at home! I’m trying to plan my workload so that I have at least one day off a week. That day is for my own house work. 10 hours woulnt be enough to clean our big house! Could do with a second day off just do the laundry!

    I look forward to learning Tapping as I am experiencing the results of chronic stress.
    All day hours I notice my shoulders and neck tight and high with tension, so I drop them thinking, “I won’t do that again.” However, within minutes the shoulders are “up in my ears”. I think, “Oh, my God, I am constantly in fight or flight with extreme muscle tension.”
    So, now I have chronic nausea and neck pain similar to a whiplash event.
    This presentation was certainly timely for me.

    I have been in chronic stress mode for a long time. Lately, I began living by myself, & paying all the bills. So not having enough money to pay the bills adds worry & fear to the equation, & living alone is also hard for me to deal with. Having to do all the chores(dishes, laundry, cooking,etc…), gives me little time to relax after coming home from work. I know my cortisol level is high. I stay away from caffeine, alcohol, etc..that can raise cortisol. I watch your other videos about chronic pain & tap along. It helps some. But I know I have deeper issues to deal with, & locating a local EFT practitioner to work with me has not proved successful. Many practice in silence & do not advertise. So I work with you & others through your websites & videos. Getting some relief is better than none at all.I cannot afford your programs for tapping for chronic pain & stress. So I am grateful that you & others provide online tapping sessions for me. All of you are a wonderful gift to me. Thanks. I need help now, & am more than willing to change.

    The health effects of stress above are a laundry list of my husband’s issues. I wonder if he ever considered doing more things just for stress relief, instead of the multiple Band-Aid fixes for the individual ailments listed, of which he has each and every one….

    Definitely need to learn much more about tapping.

    I have been going through so much ! In 4 years I lost My Baby sis,7 year old sweet granddaughter ,my oldest sis 2 years ago yesterday ! Looked after my hubby until I couldn’t cope with 24 hour care anymore and much more family crisis ! So I must say I didn’t know anything about Tapping but Firm Believer it works 👍🏻

    None of this about stress is new to me and probably not new to others. This world we live in and the unrealistic demands we put on ourselves in this Society are guaranteeing us to be stressed in some way, every day. Although people living in third world countries don’t have what we have, what they seem to be is less stressed, happier and content with living the ‘simple life’. We need to first: simplify- not feel the need to do as much, accumulate so much and strive for so much -that down the road, really doesn’t enhance our lives.
    I am “STRESSED OUT” from losing my job and source of income a few years ago and not getting that back yet. Finances and living without the basic amount of money is a constant worry.
    It has manifested itself in various ways in my body- the most current with what is known as “Meniere’s disease”. The symptoms intensify when I am feeling stress and lessen when I calm down. This is a triad of symptoms that can incapacitate one to the point of being in bed for hours or days and one never knows when it will intensify and how long it will last- there is no remedy.
    (the Doctor’s say- but I am intent on proving them wrong!)
    I have started Tapping again when this happens and I immediately get relief although not total dissipation (Yet). The Tapping seems to align my energy and calm me down. I started tapping a few weeks before the Tapping Summit 2015-for other reasons, and let me tell you- it got deep! Emotions came out of me in sobs and I was finally able to realize some things that I had buried or didn’t want to face and now could.
    I recently tapped with a friend over the phone, she’d been laid up for weeks with an unexpected bad ankle fracture which required surgical repair and lots of rest. She was going ‘batty’ laying around as she is a very active person.
    As I took her through the tapping, it took us in a new direction. I started with the tapping, focusing on her rehab and recovery and by time it was over, it re-directed to this happening to her so she would finally ‘Be Still” and give herself the time and attention SHE needed, as she is always running around doing things for her family (with two recent newborns). When we were finished and I asked her what she was feeling she replied “Calm” and then started talking about how she doesn’t take time for herself. The result of that was her commitment to using the rest of her ‘down time’ doing things for herself that she hadn’t had time for.
    Does Tapping work? I say “YES” and it is just a matter of reminding yourself of its’ instantaneous availability and relief of stress.

    I am tapping daily, and there is improvement in both the chronic pain and depression, but it seems I still have a long way to go to effect lasting change.
    I appreciate the benefits enormously, but need to do more and more tapping daily .

    Being a chronic ‘stressee’ I found the article a good reminder and ‘poke’ to tap daily. I often begin for a few days and somethings come along and interrupt my routine (like going to someone else’s home to pet sit) and I lose the routine and don’t get back to it. LOVE the article. It motivates me to put in place a Daily reminder system for where ever I am. THANKS FOR THIS

    After a run of major life stresses I became ill with vestibular migraine. The main symptom is vertigo, and this keeps me housebound. I also have depression and have been feeling very unmotivated.     Thank you for the Chronic Stress information. I have known for some time now that pretty soon something is going to have to ‘give’ – as I feel like I have been on a “tightrope” for so long, and that if I didn’t start to do something – I would end up very ill. But one of the things was – I had all of the symptoms that you have described from being so stressed the excessive production of cortisol and adrenal fatigue – that I could not see a way out. I just did not have the energy to do the solutions I needed to do. Once upon a time my mind was sharp, excellent recall, a reasonably tolerant person, I was now this angry, tired, anxious, irritated, fearful mess – and I knew it was getting worse. I created a plan of a kind, and removed myself from one extremely stressful work related situation – which provided some initial relief but all the negative conversations and situations from that work continued on in my head.

    I have been involved with tapping now for several years – off and on – never really committing to using it to really get the full benefit, but had definitely had success at the ‘crisis’ times when I did use it. Then I got one of your emails and which came with the free the CD two weeks ago. I decided that if I want my life and my health to change that I have to commit to putting myself first. have been tapping with Jessica doing the morning and evening clearings religiously for 10 days – every morning and every night – and the difference has been phenomenal. I have been sleeping so well, my energy has come back, I am thinking clearly again and therefore making better choices about what I am eating. I still have lot’s more work to do, but “everyday and in everyway I am coming back to ‘me’ – and to the ‘me’ that I was born to be. God bless you Nick and Jessica Ortner.

    Recent changes in my life has left me living alone & paying all the bills. The stress from all of this is off the chart. Fear, worry, anxiety, are my daily companions. I do tapping with Brad Yates(you tube), & especially with Nick. It does help. Staying busy helps keep my mind off how I feel. For anyone going thru what I am, Please do your tapping. EFT/Tapping is a wonderful gift, & I praise all those like Nick&Jessica who provide sites like this to help me during this difficult time in my life.

    I work on this all the time and believe I’m doing better, then something big comes along and I go into forgetfulness. Time then slips into days until I remember again that I am in charge of changing things. I begin listening to persons like you and get active again. I have a family member that I “allow” myself to get stressful over and I have a much more difficult time working that out. I need help with that situation.
