A Short Lesson on Gratitude

Written by: Nick Ortner

Today I have a short story for you…

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which read, “I am blind, please help.”

There were only a few coins in the hat – spare change from folks as they hurried past.

A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words.

Then he put the sign back in the boy’s hand so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy.

That afternoon, the man who had changed the sign returned to see how things were.

The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, “Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?”

The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way.” I wrote, “Today is a beautiful day, but I cannot see it.”

Both signs spoke the truth. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind, while the second sign conveyed to everyone walking by how grateful they should be to see…

When your life seems full of troubles, it seems difficult to maintain an attitude of gratitude, doesn’t it? All we see are our problems, like a blackened storm cloud casting a dark shadow over our lives.

And the times when everything just seems to be going smoothly? We often take these precious moments for granted too, don’t we? Caught up in the bliss, comfort, and familiarity of it all, we can simply forget to be thankful.

So what, then, is gratitude?

Simply put, gratitude is a habit. It’s a way of looking at the world and all the good things in it with a feeling of appreciation, regardless of whether or not your current situation is to your liking.

Gratitude is a heart-centered approach to being at peace with yourself and with all you have. When you practice this feeling of gratitude, it attracts even MORE things into your life for which to be grateful.

Go ahead, try it out right now. What or who do you have in your life to be thankful for? 🙂

Until next time,

Keep Tapping!

Beautiful story, and unfortunately everything you wrote is true, we as humans find it very easy to look at the negative (myself included) I guess all we can do is keep tapping and try to do better in our lives. Thank you for all your emails and I pray you and all your family have a wonderful thanksgiving and a very Merry Christmas.

I am so grateful for each day when I get up and hear the birds sing, see the flowers blooming (which is year round here in Hilton Head Island) feel the loving pressence of my loving cat cuddled next to me and know that I can get out of bed, walk forward into my day on my own two feet. I think of all of my family and friends who share their love with me, I am thankful for the food that is abundant for nourishing my body. I am thankful for my warm home and the smell of turkey cooking. I am thankful for who I am and for love & Peace in my life which I send out to all of those whose lives I share.

My husband lost his wallet containing his credit cards, driving licence, gym card, store cards, plus a fair chunk of money and some personal photographs. His wallet has never been found nor handed into the police but, whilst it has been a chore replacing all the cards (and the money), I am so thankful, and grateful, that he just lost his wallet and he wasn’t mugged and injured by someone taking the wallet from him! I hope the person who found his wallet enjoyed spending the money; obviously his/her need was greater than ours!

  27. Shane brooks says:

Some time ago after watching The Secret , I was intrigued with the man who carried a gratitude stone in his pocket . About a week later I found a small polished stone in a cupboard in the spare room : to this day I don’t know how it got there !! But it was there . I carry this little stone in my pocket every day now : This little stone reminds me how grateful I am and should be for all the good things happening in my life :: I am a much calmer person because of this stone 😊 If someone cuts me off in traffic when I’m driving , instead of getting angry I relax and let him in :: I say to myself he must be in a hurry let him go :: It’s amazing how a little thing like the stone in my pocket can change the way I see the world and the people in it 😊 I love life and try to grateful for all I have : But it easy to take it for granted until you see someone less fortunate than myself :: thank you from Shane Brooks

I’m grateful for my God who loves me no matter what, my children, my grandchildren who are all healthy, a roof over my head, good friends who love me and my ability to love them, extended family, my 2 beautiful Labrador Retrievers who love me unconditionally and keep me company, the beautiful scenery in Wisconsin, trees and flowers, all animals big or small, living in the US and not in a war torn country, my faith especially for Jesus, who sacrificed his life so I can be forgiven for my sinful nature, the sky, including the clouds, stars, sun and moon, the ability to read and write. I’m also extremely grateful that I am in good health so I can take advantage of a job opportunity to pay off a large debt for a funeral, estate issues and medical bills for my late husband.
