Dr. Lissa Rankin: Mind Over Medicine

Written by: Nick Ortner

Jessica recently sat down with NY Times best-selling author of “Mind Over Medicine,” Dr. Lissa Rankin, to talk about some revolutionary approaches to healing our bodies. In this short video conversation, you’ll learn:

– Why EFT Tapping works so well on a variety of “physical” issues.

– The vital importance of understanding the difference between our sympathetic and para-sympathetic nervous systems (and how it could be making all the difference in your healing)

– The surprising fact about how your doctor’s beliefs affect YOU!

Join Jessica and Lissa in this candid video conversation:

(and make sure to watch until the end of the video for a few good laughs)

Hi Jessica.WE are on a journey through LIFE.Everyday we are filled with knowledge and the choice of tansformation. My family has a history of chronic depression of which my grandmother and aunt where hospitalised in a mental institute.I was manifesting similar symptoms and REALISED THAT i was not going to buy into this .Through DIVINE INTERVENTION I was lead to your website and INTRODUCED to REIKI some years baCK that was a huge transformation for me as I REALISED and understood that our emotions AND THOUGHTS are the underlying cause of our physical aiilments. LIFE I is about living in balance and harmony AND IT STARTS with the self FIRST.early this year I purchased LISA BOOK THE FEAR FACTOR which is so insightful and reminded me how our emotions take centre stage in our daily LIVES either creating HAVOC or HARMONY. EFT is an excellent TOOL for me.WORKS anywhere anytime any situation and is not like a pill which you have to carry around and remember to pop.looking forward to read LISA new book MIND OVER MEDICINE.
    MANY THANKS HAPPY TAPPING

  2. Helen says:

Yes I bueve our emotions can affect our health and our healing and that we have power to heal ourselves. EFT had helped and is continuing to help me and myysuc students. I was especially enjoying hearing how we need to be in relaxation response which can be attained by tapping, meditation and other ways in order to heal. That is very helpful motivation and inspiration to do these healthy practices plus they help you feel good right away!

  3. I only heard about tapping two days ago, thanks to the wonderful Ms Louise Hay. says:

I am really interested to learn more about tapping, on a personal and emotional level.

  4. Sandhya says:

God Bless and Wish You All Happy New Year !

  5. Javier says:

Yes, I do. Each one of us has been given the tools to help ourselves in all the aspects of our life. It’s a matter of choice.

  6. Mariette says:

Sure!!! Our emotions and thoughts do impact our health and we do have the power to heal ourselfs.

21 years ago I was diagnosed, by 4 different ophthalmologist, with cronic and severe congenital glaucoma and given 6 years maximum before I lost my sight. My mother was nearly blind when she passed away and my grandmother had it too. Luckily enough I made up my mind that it would not happen to me and started researching about the power of the mind in healing our body. Used several modalities, including EFT, and about 2 years ago my exams results showed better results that 21 years ago. My doctor could not and still cannot believe it!
Dr. Rankin, consider me part of that 51%.

  7. Raewyn says:

I remember my brother degrading women for their emotions. I thought back then why would women be given these emotions if they hindered them and were a defect. I asked the question back then 20years ago. Now over the last 5 years more and more information has come through about them and that thoughts are things. I love learning more and more about these wonderful gifts we have and truely believe that we can heal ourselves. Question remains, because some people have healed themselves, why can”t it be clearly understood and taught to everyone? Thanks Raewyn:

  8. Sheryl says:

Emotions are the organs of the soul, so all illness starts there then travels to our blueprint body or our spirit body then to our physical body. Yes working on our emotional errors first can then heal the rest of the body.

  9. Joe says:

The placebo effect is real and documented. Therefore our beliefs do effect outcome.

  10. Vearle says:

This is the truth. It absolutely can heal itself. What a miracle our bodies (and brains) are!
I’d love to bring awareness to the doctors involved in obstetrics. Can we work together ? on this? Will contact you Lisa. I Include tapping with my preggie and postnatal moms.
Look forward to chatting further. You’re all doing such magnificent work. Special wishes at this time Vearle

  11. Georges says:

The mind is the gate keeper of the body.

I simply refuse to be sick. I have no interest in it and it is a waste of time and resources. Disease shows its head once in a while, cold, flu, back pain etc. I developed an awareness of the earliest symptoms so I basically have the choice to let it develop or do something about it.
90% of the time, cutting back on the load of the day does it. Skip that workout, take it easy today, add a layer of comfort, sleep more, skip TV, go to bed early, cancel whatever can be postponed, etc.

It is the same with accidents, usually big dramas have their early signs. It starts with clumsiness and misplacing things, then small hurts like paper cuts and light burns, then the intermediate hurts, bruises, twisted joints. These things try to stop your way to disaster. It means there are things in your life that are not wise to pursue. If you don’t listen to the signs, a clearer message will be sent: broken bones, open wounds. if that is not enough, something crippling or killing you will make sure you get it.

The mind sees these things a lot faster and clearer than we do but has no spoken language to communicate them to us. Awareness is the key.

  12. Lisa says:

Yes! I truly believe everything that you talked about here. I have experienced the power of positive thought and of EFT techniques personally, in my own life. I am fairly new to finding that there actually are entire communities (and now even the actual medical professionals!! 😉 that are also adopting this way of life! it’s fantastic, to say the least. I would love to explore more on this and other related topics! I have always had a strong interest in anything involving psychology or cognitive studies and have also been seemingly prone to visits to (various) doctors throughout my lifetime. Thanks so very much for sharing all that you do!

  13. Regina Wilson says:

Yes, I attend a church that believes that thoughts are things. I have become more conscious of what I am thinking in any given moment, and can make a decision to change the though if it is not healthy and wholesome. I am so happy that more doctors are on board with these concepts. It used to be that physicians cured you when they could. Now, they want to maintain you on their medications so that you can come and see them every three to six months. And, there is so much money going out for medicines. Medicines that our grandmothers and great grandmothers used to prescribe for us naturally. Then we listened to physicians tell us that people die from these home remedies. They seem to forget about the millions of people that die as a result of their medications and hospital visits. So, we the people must choose. I am the thinker that thinks the thought that creates the thing. When I need a health care practitioner, I am fortunate to have a medical provider that attends my church. So, she already believes in our inner power to heal. Years ago she diagnosed my symptoms. She and I touched and agreed that I would not become crippled and deformed as a result. Yes, I took all the tests that verified that I had this “bonkus of the conkus.” I see many people with this dis-ease all gnarled. But, not me. Thank you to my inner GOD.

  14. suzette ccm orman says:

yes I believe that your power and emotions and my thought impact my health and if I think and have the faith to heal myself I have the power to heal. from the one who created us God.

  15. Allison Orton says:

Yes, deffinately. I am sure that our minds create whatever develops in our lives–whether it be physical, or emotional. Whatever helps our bodies switch into auto healing mode works for me.

  16. Sudip says:

I have used tapping to heal my right face when it was paralysed. It’s called Bells Palsy. I tapped a lot on suppressed anger and rage from childhood and within 2 weeks my face was back to normal.
So yes you can heal your body through your emotions.

  17. Janine says:

Absolutely! I know that I can make myself sick when I worry and stress so I believe I can do the opposite with relaxation, peace and fun.

  18. Deb says:

I am a firm believer in this and as Michael Jackson sung “heal the world ,make it a better place, for you and for me and the entire human race……..” Grace and Blessings Deb Gold Coast Australia.

  19. Mary says:

Yes I do. Here’s my story:
I developed severe diarrhea in March 2015. I took a cruise in January of that year to Honduras, Belize, Costa Maya, and Cancun thinking maybe I picked up a parasite. I went to my doctor In May, under gone many a tests and couldn’t find a cause and was told there was nothing she could do for me. She recommended that I go see my Gastrochronologist which I did. I was loosing weight and my hair was falling out. He proceeded to run more test, I went gluten-free, I went dairy free still with no results. During this time I went to see a Holistic practitioner for a Total Body Analysts. She would make me remedy. it wasn’t until she told me I had a negitive person in my life; that I had to stop and think who this person was. After talking with her for a few minutes I realize this person was my best friend. We got into an disagreement back in October 2014. Instead of talking with her about it I manifested it. I became withdrawan from her, I played the scean out over and over in my head. This went on for over 10 months. When I realize that this could be the cause of me being sick I found a meditation to release her and myself from anything I was feeling and caring. When I released forgiveness and expectance in meditation my symptoms of diarrhea ceased to exist immediately. When I told My Gastrochronologist that I no longer had symptoms that I found the cause and healed myself he said he believes in a higher power to help him do the higher power!s work.
SO YES I DO BELIEVE WE HAVE THE POWER INSIDE US TO HEAL OURSELVES!!!

  20. Michelle says:

Yes!! Emotions and thoughts DEFINITELY impact health!! There is no doubt about it. I was blessed enough to to have a friend mention tapping to me when I was going through a rough emotional patch (by patch I mean about 40 years hehe). I started reading about tapping voraciously, started doing a little on my own but felt still sort of ridiculous doing it, couldn’t bring myself to be comfortable with the “I totally and completely love and accept myself” phrasing, and just felt I needed some guidance. I bought Jessica’s book, and also decided to seek out a licensed therapist who utilized tapping in her practice. WHOA!!!! HOLY RESULTS!!! The emotional shifts were immediate and huge. I found relief like none other, even having spent decades trying to figure out what was “wrong” with me. That was about 8 or 9 months ago. Since, I have continued to incorporate tapping into my life almost daily. I am totally comfortable doing it know and with all the statements, I even have gotten quite good at developing my own phrasing as suits my particular needs at any given time. One week ago exactly I slipped and fell on a snowy rock. I was able to walk on my foot, but painfully. I got home, elevated and iced the foot and did some tapping which immediately reduced the pain. Well, it turns out my foot was broken. It took 3 days until I could get in to see the podiatrist, however, for the last two days of this wait I was able to manage the pain with tapping and required no pain meds that the ER had given me. The podiatrist recommended surgery to repair the break evident in the X-rays and scheduled it for 3 days later. He asked if I had enough pain meds. I said yes but that I wasn’t really using them and was managing the pain fine. He looked quizzical but agreed I could manage it how I felt best, and sent me on my home until surgery day. For the next three days I took no pain meds and continued to walk on the heel of my foot in a boot (although gimpily at best). After surgery the doctor told me the break was MUCH worse than indicated by the X-rays – the bone (5th metatarsal left foot) was actually broken in two places, and one part of the bone had split down the middle. Instead of the expected 1 plate and 2 pins it took 3 plates and 8 pins to put all the pieces together (humpty-dumpy style boo-ya!). That was yesterday morning. Since then I have tapped profusely, also using several other energy exercises to keep my sympathetic nervous system turned off and stay in the para-sympathetic healing mode. Throughout the day I communicate to my foot and subconscious that the trauma is over, I am ok, I am safe, my foot is ok, my foot is safe, and giving my body permission to release any stress, pain, swelling, stiffness, etc. the doctor sent me home with 42 Tramadol (Ultram) tablets to be taken 1 each every 4 hours (7 days worth!). I was told by every nurse (3 total), the doctor, and the pharmacist to take the pills as scheduled WHETHER I WAS IN PAIN OR NOT!!! WHAT??? I am 24-hours post surgery and have taken exactly ZERO PAIN MEDS!!!!! I took 4 Advil yesterday 6 hours post-op for the anti-inflammatory benefits but decided even that was unnessecary as I felt no relief following. When the pain started to get worse I started tapping. I was able to bring the pain down from 7 to 2. 2 is a manageable level I can live with. I wouldn’t call it pain even, just a dull ache. I continued using the tapping throughout the day and at bedtime. I took no other pills after the 4 Advil earlier in the day. I slept through the night, waking up occasionally, doing a round or two of tapping only once, and after that waking up to notice my pain was a ZERO. I blissfully drifted back to sleep. I am still following the doctor recommendation of no weight bearing, and have crutches to help me get around, but other than the limited mobility I am fully coherent and functional. I am not a puddle of pain med induced drooliness, nor sleeping all day. I can make work calls, or read, or work on research projects. This is very, very different that the three previous ankle surgeries I had which were marked by weeks of pain meds and excruciating pain. I am no longer a victim to circumstances of injury, and I take a fully present active role in my recovery. It feels amazing. I have more recovery time to go but am excited to see how this healing journey proceeds.

  21. Elaine says:

Yes absolutely! The mind and the body work together. What is happening in your mind is reflected in your body. I had a brain tumour several years ago and temporarily lost the use of the left side of my body prior to surgery. I lived in an apartment two floors up and was unable to use the stairs. Until one day, standing at the top of the stairs I started talking to my leg, telling it to move. After about 5 minutes of yelling at it, it shifted and took me down the stairs. I continued to use this method with all my left side body parts and am funcioning normally today. Meditate, create, think positive thoughts, use mantras repeatedly… They all work.

  22. Jean E. says:

STRESS, I have a 40 year old son with an addictive personality, comes by it honestly – grandparents – skipped us, but now him … (alcohol & cigarettes)
I being MOM, turning 70 years of age in March, 2016 fight the inner gut reaction – with sadness internalized – not good!
Different healing – TAPPING – is so important — your body really IS your business! Shifting consciousness – coping – HEAL YOURSELF !!
Thank you for this wonderful video.! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year, 2016 !!! xo

  23. Paul says:

I absolutely believe. I can’t really point out any definite proof from my own life, however. I spent some time in the army and I have a military-type attitude of never wanting to go to the doctor. I tend to find that most of my medical issues sort themselves out.
I am always questioning the medical advice that my family receive, I just have almost zero faith in a GP family doctor that sees dozens of patients every day and always seems to give the same diagnosis: “it’s a virus”

  24. Cindy says:

Yes! Absolutely! Thank you for a great interview and the inspiring messages concerning our power to heal ourselves. I agree with beliefs and attitudes that were so eloquently shared. Now I definitely want to read Mind Over Medicine! Thank you again.

  25. David says:

I agree with Dr Lissa Rankin — the good Lord gave our bodies the ability to heal — glad that finally others Doctors and people are actually believing and taking the actions needed.

  26. Natalie Bossi says:

It is great to hear increasingly from people within the field of medicine working for a change towards empowering ourselves rather than leaving the responsibility of health in the hands of so-called experts. It is often only people like her, who speak the language of medicine, and who were trained along certain frameworks, who can more effectively convince others in the field. What an incredible woman! It takes conviction and courage as well, something which Dr Rankin obviously has in spades.Bravo!

  27. Susan Woodward says:

I am definitely in your group!

  28. Lisa Hurrell says:

I truly have seen first hand how emotions can have a positive effect in healing. My sister was given just a few months to live – stage 4 small cell lung cancer- inoperative- & after a shift in her thinking- she in now almost 5 years in remission.

  29. Johanna says:

A very encouraging video….. We need mor and more of this!!
As a complimentary therapist I see proof of this. Really want to read this book….. Just reading Medical Medium right now.
Keep them coming….. Enjoying all the tapping too. Thank you all soooobmuch.
Wishing you all a peaceful Christmas and a happy healthy and love filled new year. Xx

  30. Jean Dyck says:

Very good video. I know the body can heal itself. Thank you Nick for the Tapping solution , I believe in it.

  31. Sarah Meredith says:

I absolutely believe my emotions and thoughts impact my health. I don’t know if I can heal “the incurable” though, ie things that are genetic since birth. I also don’t know what time frames are reasonable for those things that are curable through our thoughts and emotions. When you’re sick, it’s easy to get frustrated and give up.

  32. Akayla says:

Yes I do believe that your emotions and your thoughts impact your health . All those cells within your body are responding to our thoughts and emotions . We have the ability to heal ourselves in every moment .

  33. Shirley says:

I know I have a divine healer within. I enjoyed listening. I want to start tapping for health

  34. Sandy says:

Yes, definitely. I notice it when I get my blood pressure checked by someone that I feel uncomfortable with.

  35. Joyce Lobato says:

I experience the impact of my thoughts and emotions on my health every day and I believe that true healing can only come from within.

  36. Nancy Sdams says:

I for sure believe our emotions effect our Health!
Just doing Tapping really confirmed that for me. I live in a body that is full of pain! I know because I’m doing Quantom healing and when my emotions are stirred I stop and Tap and it helps. I do still take medication for my Thyroid, and will be going on dedicated Thyroid which my Dr is all weird about because he has never prescribed it! How silly! This is my body and Synthroid has put weight on not nice weight I’m a bubble it also gives pain! So yes I am prescribing for myself with the help of Thyroid Mom! She has helped me so much! People and Drs don’t realize how much pain comes with Thyroid disease. I’m getting better at when to Tap and it works and it calms me so! If I may say so Jessica you look great❤️All my love to you both! Nancy

  37. Malathie says:

I believe 100%. I learned EFT Tapping from Nick in 2012. Since then I am a regular Tapper. I have healed a lot. I am a different person. Thank you Nick:) I am so grateful:)

  38. Ana says:

Very good video. It is fascinating the power of your mind and belief to heal your body. Thank you Jessica for your work. Quick question, any way to do the EFT without tapping your head?

  39. Gabriela says:

Yes. I definitely think so. Three years ago somebody broke my hart in a million pieces; it was very hard for me to get back to my old self and when I finally did it I had a big fibroid which had to be removed through a surgery. So now I am more careful about the way I channel my emotions.
Thank you for your continuos support and valuable information.:-)

  40. Lylia Fuller says:

Yes, I do believe our emotions affect our health!
    Thank you!

  41. Brenda says:

Wonderful discussion! I am a believer in mindfulness over medicinal struggles. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s and 14 years ago I could not find a single gastro doc that believed I could heal with better nutrition. I struggled taking Prednisone on and off for 3 years. All along I kept searching for another solution to combat these diagnoses. Unfortunately the battle with conventional medicine found me in the operating room having to have my colon removed. I am extremely grateful for my surgeon whose bedside manner was full of promise and hope for as normal a life lived under the circumstances. Finally I came upon a book written by Elaine Gottshel who opened up a new pathway for healing through nutrition. Although I live fully with an ostomy I am fully aware of how the mind can push through all phases to appreciate how amazing our bodies are. I have also incorporated EFT into my life and now have my grandchildren meditating and tapping along with healthy nutritionall habits. Thank you for opening all of us to up look inside our selves and listen for new pathways recognizing the wisdom of the mind over body. Happy healing to all!

  42. Dee says:

I am a born energy worker and I not only think ones mind creates pain and discomfort i know it definitely can and does heal any thing in the body. One of the most truthful and important statements ever said is “AS ONE THINKS SO IT IS” and mind over matter is real.

  43. Vigdis Isenhag says:

Oh yes I do think we can heal ourselves! I read a book some years ago written by a swedish doctor Susanna Ehdin, called “heal yourself”. Since then I have healed a lot of healthproblems that I had. I will defenitly read this book too!

  44. Renita says:

This short video so, so adds more to the story of the body’s amazing ability to heal, the wonders of EFT and the energy and effects of the universe surrounding us….as in how your ability to heal is affected by the belief of your doctor!! I can’t wait to get this book!!

  45. Herdis says:

Yes absolutely. I started learning this in 2013 and I have had remarkable results, also treating others.
I have been reading The Tapping Solution in Danish, The Tapping Solution for Pain Relief in English. Jusr now I am reading Lissa´The Fear Cure in Danish. So I would be happy to win Lissa´Mind Over Medicine.
How wonderful to listen to this great doctor and Jessica as always. This brings hope for the future.
    Lots of love

  46. aida ferrarone says:

Yes! And my aches and pains are less of a bother when I feel happy…Even though I have AR…
Thanks for all you are doing.

  47. Kim says:

Of course I can heal myself—we all can. 4 years ago they carved my ovaries out and told me I would need hormones for the rest of my life. I rejected their advice and follow my own path and today I am better than ever. Think, ask, believe and it is yours. Thank you Jessica & Dr Rankin

  48. Nancy says:

The stress of my life goes to my stomach and chest and each year it gets more painful so I must change that. I am now 73 and am learning to do tapping to rid my mind and body of the overwhelm I carry when for example I wake at night and the pressure of stress is so unreasonable.

  49. aida ferrarone says:

    YES! I DO.
Though in my search for Spiritual Light for over half a century I’m a beginner, I have learned to believe in our own healing power and I have a long story for it. Well, I’m still active and working at being healthy with the help of EFT -now your Tapping.
So, I follow your posts and keep on Tapping.
    Thanks!

  50. teresa torres says:
