Wayne Dyer Woke Me Up This Morning

Written by: Nick Ortner

Rumi quoteI’m pretty sure Wayne Dyer woke me up at 5 a.m. this morning.

The last couple of months, with a newborn in the house, it’s been our daughter June waking me up, but today was different. Two days after Wayne’s passing, I feel his influence in my life more strongly than I ever have before.

So as I found myself stirring at 5 a.m., I could hear Wayne’s voice, quoting Rumi:

“The breezes at dawn have secrets to tell you

Don’t go back to sleep!

You must ask for what you really want.

Don’t go back to sleep!

People are going back and forth across the doorsill where the two worlds touch,

The door is round and open

Don’t go back to sleep!”

After a bit of silent protesting (but Wayne, sleep is precious these days…5am?), I listened to the message and got up. And now I sit here joining you.

And I sit here joining you in another of Wayne’s beloved practices: Writing. Wayne penned all his books by hand, writing them out on yellow sheets of paper, a practice which while incredible and admirable, I will politely decline to partake of this morning. The results of that would be illegible handwriting that never saw the light of day, and a left hand smudged with ink. 🙂

But in honor of Wayne, I wake at dawn

(it’s actually pitch black out right now, overshot it a bit… oops), and I write.

I thought all day yesterday about how Wayne would want to be remembered, and while I can’t say for sure, I’m quite certain that he would want nothing more than but for us to commune once again with his millions of wise words. He would want us to love more deeply, to give more freely, to forgive more fully.

So yesterday I loaded my iPod back up with all the amazing lectures of his that I’ve heard again and again and again and asked, “What do you have to share with me today Wayne?

I was struck as I listened to him yesterday and this morning, that this is a man, who in his passing, TRULY lives on. We often say that about those we love, and it’s true, they live on in our memories, in our hearts, and with Wayne, he lives on in the legacy of thinking he left behind.

So today, as you go about your day, I invite you to practice just one of the things he often talked about:

Making Conscious Contact

This idea can mean different things to different people. It can be religious, or secular. It can be profound or it can be simple. Sit with your eyes closed for 30 seconds at a traffic light as you commute to work (as Wayne joked, there’s always someone behind you kind enough to let you know the light has turned- lol!)

So today- Make Conscious Contact.

Find one moment, or ten, where you pause, breathe, and connect to the deepest part of who you are. Personally, when I do this I pay attention to, and wait for that moment of “connection”.

It feels like something is syncing up like there’s a greater awareness, breathing slows down, perhaps you feel a tingle in your spine, perhaps some love in your heart. It’s a moment when you know you are closer to the divine, to your true nature than you were the moment before.

Even now, as you’re reading this, you have the opportunity, don’t let it pass, to take even 10 seconds to make conscious contact.
Do it. For yourself. For your family. Do it for the world.

And of course, do it for Wayne. 😉

Much love!

Nick

P.S. Share with me below, what does making conscious contact mean to you? Did you actually do it just now? 🙂 What happened?

Nick, thank you for the wonderful tribute to our beloved teacher, Wayne Dyer. I’ve had the privilege to have him visit me in my dream twice since he crossed over. They were very significant and prophetic messages. He knew that I was going to be fighting for my life, and am still hanging on tight so I can ride out this ominous and daunting storm. I listen and watch and read all his books, audioes, dvd’s….
I was supposed to go with him on the cruise last October, but of course it had to be cancelled because of his passing. I have been getting up about 30 min before sunrise for the past month. And it is indeed a most precious and intimate time to connect with our beloved Mother Nature. This is also the time when Photosynthesis happens, thus all the trees give out the most oxygen.
He has been and will always be present in my life, for he has been my best life coach.

Connecting has developed for me from prayer and amen to prayer and shut up long enough for my words in my head to quiet until I begin to hear words that are not mine, but from my Father in Heaven. Words that I would not…could not have come up with. Often so edifying as to be almost embarrassing to be in my head about myself. That’s when I know and hear and can feel how very much I am loved by my creator and what He intends for me!

Yes, I am very thankful to Dr.Dyer and you for sharing your knowledge of caring for others.

I feel sad every time I hear story about parents being confined in nursing homes and begging to go home. It reminds me when I took care of my 90 year old mother. I decided not to pursue my schooling and flew her from LA to care after her. Everybody said she was demented but she was not. She was just tired to superficial talks, and sometimes, she heard people talking in front of her to my other relatives on how hard it was to take care of demented old person.
I was overwhelmed in the beginning but when I embraced her she whispered to me it would be okey, she could still hear and understand. I looked surprised, and then she asked me to play old Christmas songs, and it was summer. We sang with the tunes and she was clapping and hooting with laughter. Wow, was it going to be like this everyday? No, I started her day by holding her hands, embracing her gently (not too hard, or it caused her pain) and said I love her being with me.
My husband and I took her everywhere, even out of state, and she cooperated with every assistance she needed – i.e changing her diapers, cutting and feeding her. pushing her wheelchair, etc. We never made her feel she was having memory lapses sometimes. We asked her opinions and participation in so many actitivities, even joining us with dinners and parties with friends. At the end she asked if she could just lay down more because her body was getting tired. The best thing was being with her to the end, experiencing her dying. We learned a lot! I want to encourage others to be with their parents and not to worry about taking care of them. Things works its way. Being thankful helps with the worry because it reminds me that God gave me every , Thanks, Raquel.

Maybe to give you the thumbs up that we the “fans” will be here for you too. Yes! got the message Dr. Dyer!

Hi Nick, thanks for writing about Wayne, I feel his presence too, it is HUGE, gentle, and loving, like the sun, shining on everything and everyone. What a great guy. Such a legacy he has left.
I did take a moment to connect, the most direct and fastest way for me is breathing and focusing on my heart, felt a lot of love and deep appreciation flow from my heart, for Wayne, for you, for myself and for everyone. Thanks for the suggestion, it has shifted my energy and will make this an even better day. Blessings to you Nick.

Thank you so much for this post. I discovered the beautiful Wayne Dyer when I was in college many many years ago. I would go to the library and check out his videos-they would allow you to check them out but you had to watch them in a private “viewing room” and there I would be watching “your erroneous zones” over and over. My friends thought I was loony to spend my time doing that-I remember leaving feeling joy and excitement like never before. I’ve been very sad about Wayne’s passing and reading your post just took me back to that room and those moments. What would happen if everyone chose to focus on and express the love, compassion, and joy that Wayne and you do? Bless you both and I can just completely see Wayne standing beside you cheering you on as you continue spreading bliss into the world.

I am so grateful to have watched Dr Wayne Dyer’s The Shift. Amazing and divine timing. I guess I needed to watch this film. It has taught me to understand that it’s ok to detach myself from my ego. A message why I needed to watch this. Thank you Thank you Thank you.
