Do You Procrastinate?

Written by: Nick Ortner

Do you procrastinate?

If so, do you know why? And do you know what it’s REALLY costing you?

Wayne Gretzky, the greatest hockey player of all time, said, “Procrastination is one of the most common and deadliest of diseases, and its toll on success and happiness is heavy.”

Is your success and happiness suffering because of procrastination?

If you ever procrastinate and think that you’d like to change, then I have a wonderful video for you today, with Jessica interviewing EFT Master Carol Look on the subject of procrastination, and how to use Tapping to overcome these habits.

Follow along with Carol in the video to get moving right away! 🙂

Watch it now – don’t procrastinate! Haha!

Some of the things covered in the above video include:

  • How to figure out how procrastination is actually serving you or doing something positive for you (even if that positive thing is limiting you).
  • What questions to ask to figure out why you’re procrastinating. (Two questions, in particular, are very important in helping you get right to the cause.)
  • How to start Tapping. (Carol uses a great example of Tapping on the fear of being criticized.)

Until next time…

Keep Tapping!

Nick Ortner

This was good. I’m a painter and do furniture Annie Sloan painting, also tiles and I’ve won at the fair,, but I’m so afraid people won’t like my work and I tell myself they wouldn’t buy it. I’m just to shy and afraid to put it out there. I’m really going to work on this. Thank you Carol and Jessica.

  2. Patricia says:

Thank you Carol and Jessica! This was a nugget of gold for me. Yes, I can relate to the fear of being criticized and/or not being good enough. Intellectually, I know its silly but emotionally it doesn’t ‘feel’ silly. I loved this video cause it was short and sweet and so helpful. Excited at clearing procrastination!

  3. Mac says:

I’ve gotta’ say that for me the “fear of getting it out there” doesn’t seem to “hit home” for my particular procrastination issues. In my particular case, I run a small electronics repair shop (pro-audio gear), and at times when I find myself “stumped” on a problem repair, I’ll put it aside, hoping that some “down-time” away from it will help me return to it with a “fresh” approach. SOMEtimes this will work great, and I’ll return to the repair and find the solution within minutes. BUT…there are [more often than I’d like to admit] times when I still find myself at a “dead end” upon returning to the repair. In these cases, what seems to happen is that I again put it aside, but have a very difficult time motivating myself to return to the repair, even though I’d LOVE to “get it out there” (and out of my shop)…….there must be an alternate approach for my procrastination here.

Predominantly fearful about other’s reactions if and when I succeed. On a conscious level, I laugh at this, but this fear seems to come from unconscious … have nightmares about it. So I don’t know if all the “reasons” I have for procrastinating are real, like not having enough skill, time, money, wisdom or energy to do it, which rotate in and out as my conscious reasons. I understand the source of this unconscious fear plainly, but it does not occur to me as the reason when I ask myself the question “What am I worried about?”

  5. Margee says:

Wow, BIG THANK-YOU Carol and Jessica…I’ve been tapping my little heart open 🙂 What I thought was lack of follow thru is the step sister to procrastination. I put myself out there, as I’m bold enough. I’ve had my share of criticism, rejection and jealousies, along with amazing opportunties (most I jumped into)…so it’s a duality within. After really digging deep I believe fear of being exposed are linked to childhood trauma…..gotta go and tap away this junk away!

  6. Sandi says:

Hi, this was exciting, for me. I have a PhD in procrastination.
I cannot get success, money, lose weight, get healthy for myself. I successfully do all these things for others, but not myself.
I have been working for years on this, and recently became aware that it was because my parents force-fed me when I was little and I choked and died for a short time. I didn’t like my mother’s cooking and I ate from dustbins (trash cans. I realised that I was successfully avoiding my mother’s food and at the same time feeding myself. This was met with force feeding, which resulted in me being killed. I was only about 3/4 years old.
I have tapped on issues of fear of success, eating so I don’t get killed again etc. etc. But I took Carol’s advice (Tony Robbins also talks of reversing things too) and reversed my fear.
I suddenly realised that my fear is of being successful in anything at all which will provoke my being killed. However, when I was killed, I successfully survived. So after tapping on the fear, I switched and tapped on already successfully surviving that ordeal.
Thank you, here’s hoping I have unwrapped the last layer of the onion!

  7. Suzanne Moscardelli says:

1st of all I have to admit that I procrastinated on watching the video. I see where the fear of being out there makes sense. I have procrastinated on starting my blog and doing some writing projects regarding my health coaching business. I am going to keep taping!

  8. Jean P Saunders says:

I loved the video I am a bad procrastinater that was very insightful
    Thanks
    Cheers

  9. Josie says:

It never occurred to me that there could be an emotion like fear involved with my procrastination, other than disappointment in myself! After watching, I realized that if I were to complete my housework, get rid of clutter and be organized, I would have time for hobbies I want to pursue and I’m thinking now that these hobbies I once enjoyed may not be as fulfilling or maybe I won’t be able to paint as well as I once did or the woodworking I’d like to do could be a flop! I will tap on these fears and see if it helps me get started. The tapping onhe video helped some but I thinka more direct approach to my issues will serve me better. Thank you both so much for the start in the right direction.

  10. Sandra Phipps says:

Carol’s comment while tapping really impacted me…”So what if they criticize me … I can handle it” YES!!! After all, who makes the other person the boss of me and my reaction:)

  11. Leslie says:

I am procrastinating on my regular day to day work at my job. The issue seems to be starting a project and staying with it to completion (not just completing it).

The downside of starting, I think, is not getting to do other things – i.e. playing, talking to people, doing what I consider more “fun” things.

The upside of procrastinating – again, I think – seems to have something to do with not feeling “controlled”.

    (Still tapping…)

  12. Vicki Fraser says:

I have so much to do and it is all because of letting it build up by procrastinating. I also find I accuse my family of procrastinating when they don’t get things done. Vicious circle isn’t it. I tapped on the criticism idea, but mostly felt the guilt of being lazy. So now I have to tap on forgiving myself first. And I have let myself become sick. I think it is all related, and so the timing of this interview arriving in my inbox is again a gift from the universe. Thankyou both for being the providers of this gift.

  13. Lois says:

Well, that was certainly a new way of thinking of it for me. Maybe now I can make some progress.

  14. Mary Ann Purnell says:

Thank you. Good examples – now I can get this desk cleaned off because I feel better now. 🙂

  15. Pat says:

Awesome! Quickly going through my emails, as usual, and I actually took the time to read/listen to this one! So glad I did! I’m feeling hopeful, thankful and inspired. Living with procrastination for so long and now feeling like I can really do something about it! Yay!!
    Thank You!! <3

  16. suesanne polzin says:

I REALLY NEED TO GET THIS GOING IN MY LIFE! THIS GOT ME OPENING A BOOK THAT I HAVE BEEN PUTTING OFF FOR WEEKS. I AM GETTING INTO A NEW BUSINESS AND NEED TO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THIS BOOK. NOW EVERYDAY I CAN TAP BECAUSE I KNOW WHAT THE REAL FEAR IS AND CONTINUE BEING THE BEST THAT I CAN BE. THANKS FOR THIS

  17. Bill Kolbe says:

This seems like it could be very helpful and certainly there are so many who suffer with this problem.

  18. I am not sure about how to tell the level of the fear or whatever the cause. tapping is a good tool if you have studied it awhile. says:

I would love to be able to tell what the underlying emotion is and what to say but I am not sure I could always do that. For example I procrastinate on cleaning up my house or working on my tax return, etc.

I dont know what the underlying reason is.

  19. Avana says:

Great Show ! I hve now become an ardent fan of tapping and all the good it brings !

  20. R. Smith says:

The first round took me from a 10 to a 5 and I could feel my body let go as that released. The second round took me to zero! It will be good to see what happens now! Also got that great tip of target the feeling to get to the core of the issue. This helped me so much! Thank you

  21. Karen McBride says:

I can’t wait to tackle all my other issues that I have put aside and didn’t know why.

    THANKS!!!

  22. Isabel says:

Loved the video, thank you Carol and Jess! I’ve been enlightened and inspired to finally get my procrastination under control. I can’t wait to see what comes up during the process. It’s been holding me back far too long!

  23. Bryant says:

Wow! Thanks for sharing that. I can use that information and get very clear with some of the issues I have. For example, I am a single man and I always procrastinate about approaching beautiful women. After watching the video, I realized that I was afraid of making a mistake and being embarassed. I love tapping ! Thank you!

  24. Kayla D says:

Thank you for this! I have Nick’s tapping book and even a set of Gary’s videos, but have procrastinated getting into them – even though I have used tapping in the past and I KNOW they will help me. 🙁 I even procrastinate with my job, then get stressed over being up against deadlines, and continually beat myself up over both not doing and then doing last-minute. Ugh. I could REALLY use Carol’s book to help me get beyond this, so I’m crossing my fingers and toes that I win a copy!

  25. Doris Dejwakh says:

I know I’m procrastinating on finishing my novel — I hadn’t realized that it was because I’m afraid of “putting myself out there” for people’s criticism! My problem is when I tap, I have a hard time feeling the emotion. I have a habit of immediately repressing any emotion that I feel, so I never get a number. What can I do about this repression syndrome? I’m afraid of feeling my own emotions! I think it has to do with my childhood, when my parents told me I had to be a “good girl” in order to be loved. So of course a “good girl” doesn’t have strong emotions. Do you have any suggestions for this problem? Thanks, Jessica!

  26. Heather Halpape says:

Thank you for help in getting to the key issues of procrastination ….. it is holding me back from opening that door … facing reality….

The downside of procrastination is I never get that weight of the project off my shoulders… it holds me back from opening new doors… FEAR …. as I can use the project as an excuse to not do things …. and it the fear of having to address the people that will be affected if i finish my seperation …. fight for what i need to move forward…

The up side of procrastination is that i live in denial of reality…. i don’t have to face up to what really is…if i update my finances… I will have to face where i really am… and make better decisions… maybe say no to the event I am invited to… as I can’t afford …. or and I will have no excuse not to open new doors and move on with my life ….

  27. Sharon says:

Aha! I keep thinking I’m doing something wrong….I’m just not tapping in all the emotional areas!
    Thank You!

  28. Kim Lukhard says:

Thank you for this video. This information is very useful for me and my clients, I am a dietitian. I love the question “what is procrastination doing for you?” I never thought to ask that question.
    Thanks again.

  29. Mary Jane says:

My procrastination is rooted in a fear of failure/not being good enough and being criticised by family & friends.
I know the tapping works…so I am digging deeper and tapping more and more to get to the deepest roots of this hurdle.
Thanks for the continued help & support for all of us.

  30. Kandi says:

During and after the tapping with this video, I felt a rise in excitement at the prospect of getting going and completing my project. Thank you it’s miraculous.
    Kandi

  31. Debra Nelson says:

    Carol,
I loved your tapping on procrastination. I have muscle tested myself on lazy and came up with nothing but when I muscle test procrastination it is right there. However, I could not identify the feelings behind the procrastination. Now I understand why I procrastinate about certain aspects of my life.
This will help me with cleaning my office, getting my business cards done, studying, housework and so much more. I just need to identify the feeling first.Thank you so much for changing my life.

  32. Kit says:

As I tapped along it was interesting to have uncomfortable fearful feelings start to become more pronounced in my stomach and then have the feelings move toward my chest and throat as I tapped away with Carol. The feelings went from a 5-6 to a 2-3 in a short amount of time with only a few rounds of tapping. I allowed the emotions to come to mind and tapped on what came up. I felt much better after tapping and have a stronger sense of “I can do it” attitude that was not there before. Very interesting and helpful.

  33. Caroline says:

I love your book Carol and have addressed this as I have often procrastinated. And have book your book, read your book in kindle often!

  34. Karen Naik-Araiti says:

It was very interesting and helpful to hear how Carol Look got to the target – picture the project finished…how…would you feel…that’s your target. I would have tapped on the procrastination.

  35. Michele W. says:

This was the perfect topic at the perfect time for me! I thought that the video was terrific and thank you for asking the all important questions regarding how often I would have to tap and how do I know what to say. I have been procrastinating getting my home put back together after it flooded…TWICE! I seriously look like I should be featured on “Hoarders”! So, I am tapping away!

I do have a question though. What if it is not fear based procrastination? I really think that my procrastination is coming from a place of overwhelm and something else that I can not quite pinpoint. How do I tap to that?

Everything you do excites me! You are awesome! Thank you!

  36. Ann Kroeber says:

I really appreciate this video. Thanks for posting.

  37. Keng says:

This is great. Though a very short version but I felt slight changes inside me. Well, kind of felt lighter in a way. Like what she mentioned, I have always been procrastinating about getting my website set up cos I’m not sure what name to put, what contents etc, etc, fear that others may think that the website sucks. Always delaying and that’s the reason why my coaching and training deals are not much cos I’m not marketing myself enough. I’m starting to take up an online web design course and meeting with a web designer next week to get this done.

Thank you. This tapping reinforce what I am doing or suppose to be doing.

  38. Paras says:

Fear of embarrassment of a shabby project and fear of not having enough knowledge to complete the project leads to procrastination for me.

  39. Aiyana says:

Wow, Ifeel I have more courage already! It’s just fear and I can stare that down
and do some tapping! It’s good to have choices. I don’t have to put off so many things as I have been recently. Thank you, Carol!

  40. Norma Dejou says:

Thanks for the session. I need to get clear about the target because I have different areas of procrastination. I could at least see how much tapping I need to do!!!

  41. vilna says:

This helped me a great deal. Watching this video was a wake up call. I have the Tapping Solution book and DVD from Nick I got it a year ago I practice for a while and stopped, but after watching Carol I am going to get back into it. Thanks very much for this Video

  42. Sharon says:

I was raised by an ex military person…creating an enormous link to fear of not getting it RIGHT(not blaming, simply identifying)…Oh hello yes with the life long procrastination!! Not if I am under supervision, but on my own it is huge. Tapping has been a god send! Thank you!

  43. Debbie says:

    Very clearly and precisely shared…thanks!

  44. linda graham says:

I have been procrastinating. I tapped along and I felt a lot more relaxed about it. There is always that fear of failure too.

  45. Emma says:

I find that the upside of procrastinating is that usually it includes to get other (likely to be practical) projects done-things like tidying the closet which needed it for a number of years.. At the moment procrastinating is a paradigm for me, I’ve just started a whole new chapter of my life with exciting travels and great new things to look forward to. I’m actually using procrastination to clear up what once was getting ready for the next (like a cliche).

Downsides are to occur in times where we feel out of harmony in ourselves. We feel useless, try not to procrastinate if we realised it to be a habit and procrastinate even more-as explained in the video. I have phases like which is a major creative block. I have to pay attention when it occurs-my life is about observing and creating artistic things. But we can’t always. Procrastination reminds me of that.

It’s about adjusting our expectations to our own abilities/standards for what we are and what we need to succeed. A task committed to life.

Have fun, that drives good energy. Huge thanks for the video and the taken time!
If it’s possible I would enjoy very much to read the book by Carol Look. Maybe I’ll find the piece missing.

  46. Paris Arrington says:

Hi Carol and Jessica, I really enjoyed it. I have problems with cleaning my house and being on time for work. I am not sure what the upside is for these issue. Look forward to more information

    Sincerely,

    Paris

  47. Angela Albano says:

Wow! I am so glad I did not procrastinate in opening this email today. The topic of the video was precisely what I needed. I have been slowly, very slowly organizing my poems and essays into categories with the intent of publishing them into a few books. A few Books??? How could I possibly think that my writings are good enough to publish? Who is going to want to publish my work? How terrible it would feel to be criticized and rejected! Well, I replayed this video with Carol Look various times and my stress level went from 10 to 7 to 5 to 3 to 1 to 0. Yay! ZERO! The line that broke a deep sigh and tension in my chest was: SO WHAT? Right…so what! At least I will enjoy grouping my work into book form and self publish if I choose to like I did with my first book of poems. My heart is full of gratitude for your target-centered tapping on this topic of procrastination. Thanks Carol and Jessica.

  48. Sam DuBois says:

Just to balance out the feedback. I do not find Jessica’s echoing the prompts to be distracting, at all. Like so many things that annoy us, probably a shift in attitude can relieve the distraction! (And we are all different, aren’t we?)

  49. Marie says:

Thank you Carol and Jessica. That was extremely helpful. I have so many projects that I will now begin to tap on. I love tapping because it has helped me to discover the hidden emotions that stop me from doing and having the best possible life! The other day I felt resentful towards my husband and didn’t even know why.
I began to tap on it, and in a flash the memory of why I was resentful to him just popped in my mind. Then I was able to move past it and finally forgive him.
Tapping has been amazing for me. Now I can’t wait to use it to clean up my house and get my business going! Thank you again. Keep doing what you’re doing.
    Marie

  50. Nancy Moody, RN says:

It makes a lot of sense that while you are tapping you are also concentrating and letting go of emotions that are holding you back. I bought the Tapping Book and after listening to this I’m going to get it our and really work at tapping.

    Thank you!
