The Real Deal About Food, Stress, Tapping and more…

Written by: Nick Ortner

Oh…food, food, food, food, food…

What’s happened to you dear food? What happened to the joy in food? What happened to eating meals in peace?

What happened to feeling grateful, nourished, warmed, happy… and more.

Our old friend, provider, sustainer, base of life…

Our memories, our families, our heritage… food… has turned into…

STRESS. FEAR. ANGER. GUILT.

Cravings, weight gain, toxins… do I eat this? Don’t eat that! I feel guilty about eating this… so much stress…

When did food… forgive my French, become such a pain in the ass? On so many levels!

Well, there are two factors at play here, and we’re going to do some tapping to help significantly with one of them.

The first factor is the reality of our current food landscape: Stuff in a box.

This is a subject that books have been written about, it’s got so many complexities, that I’m only going to touch upon it here; but we are truly, deeply disconnected from our food. Once we as a culture started processing, packaging, freezing, and shipping our food, things changed in a dramatic way.

The nutritional content of “regular” food just isn’t there anymore and most of the stuff we’re eating either barely qualifies as food or is outright harmful. So I’m not going to take the approach that all you have to do is “tap”, feel good about your food, and everything will be fine. Can you transform a McDonald’s cheeseburger into something that is good for you with an elevated consciousness, positive thoughts, and a high vibration?

I absolutely think you can… but it’s a HECK of a lot of work! And most of us aren’t there, so the McDonald’s cheeseburger ends up being just that, a cheeseburger.

family preparing dinnerWe’re much better off starting with the good stuff, the fresh stuff, out of the garden, from the local farm, organic, full of nutrients and life force. Then it can actually help us, not be a burden on our system.

Ok, so the food itself needs to improve, but the information is out there to help you make that happen. But for most people, that’s not the big sticking point in getting healthy and nourished.

The big sticking point is that we’ve heard so many different theories. We’ve been told, “Eat this!” by one person and the next person says, “Don’t eat that!”, that our heads simply SPIN!

A meal is no longer a meal, it’s packed full of confusion, fear, guilt, stress, and more. And whatever you’re actually eating is nothing compared to the poison pill of negative emotions and stress that you’re swallowing. Heavy stuff!

So let’s start with easing that burden a bit with some tapping…

Ready?

(By the way, if you read this article and don’t do this tapping right now, you’re wasting your time. 🙂 I don’t mean to be harsh, but the difference between this system of thinking is we’re actually DOING something to change right now, instead of exploring it intellectually. I don’t want you to walk away “knowing” more about food and our experience with it, I want you to walk away “being” different around food and YOUR experience with it – so TAP!)

If you’re not familiar with the tapping points, you can see them here.

It’s always important to measure our progress with EFT, so we know where we are and where we’re going, and even though these tapping statements are a bit more “global”, try this to measure it:

Say out loud: I am relaxed, at peace, and full of joy regarding the food I put in my body.

On a 0-10 scale, how true does that feel? 10 being 100% true, 0 being not true at all. Give it a number, it doesn’t have to be exact or perfect, and write it down.

Now let’s getting tapping!

Karate Chop: Even though I’m really stressed out about what I should and shouldn’t be eating, I deeply and completely accept myself
Karate Chop: Even though I can’t stop worrying about what’s “good for me” and “bad for me” I deeply and completely accept myself
Karate Chop: Even though I’ve heard too many different things about food, I’m overwhelmed and don’t know what to do.I choose to relax now

Eyebrow: All this stress around food
Side of the Eye: Should I eat this?
Under the Eye: I can’t eat that!
Under Nose: This is good for me
Under Mouth: That’s bad for me
Collarbone: Or is it?
Under Arm: I just don’t know what to eat
Top of the Head: So stressed out about eating

Eyebrow: I’ve read so many different things
Side of the Eye: Everyone seems to disagree on what to eat!
Under the Eye: I’m confused, scared and stressed about food
Under Nose: All this stress around food
Under Mouth: Releasing all this stress around food
Collarbone: All of this anxiety around food
Under Arm: I shouldn’t eat this
Top of the Head: I shouldn’t eat that

Eyebrow: Should, shouldn’t, should, shouldn’t
Side of the Eye: So much confusion
Under the Eye: Such a burden
Under Nose: So much anxiety
Under Mouth: So much stress
Collarbone: All around food
Under Arm: This stress around food
Top of the Head: Releasing all this stress around food

Let’s do some positive tapping (if you’re still feeling strongly negative, or if other things have come up, tap on those specifically before moving on to the positive).

Eyebrow: I choose to relax around food now
Side of the Eye: I choose to feel safe around food now
Under the Eye Food is safe
Under Nose: I am safe
Under Mouth: I am at peace and easily choose the foods the best nourish me
Collarbone: I relax around food, enjoying every bite I eat, regardless of what it is
Under Arm: Once I choose to eat something, I relax and release any guilt, fear or anxiety around it
Top of the Head: I choose to relax around food

Eyebrow: My body knows exactly what it wants and needs
Side of the Eye: I attract all the right information to help me choose the best food for me
Under the Eye: Food is safe
Under Nose: I am safe
Under Mouth: I choose to relax now
Collarbone: I let go of any fear, guilt or anxiety around food
Under Arm: Letting it go
Top of the Head: Letting it all go

Take a deep breath… and let it go.

How ya feeling? Let’s check in.

Say out loud: I am relaxed, at peace, and full of joy regarding the food I put in my body.

How true does that feel? Did the number go up? What else came up when you were doing the tapping? Remember, when we’re doing “global” tapping like this, we really want to pay attention to “specific” things that come up for us. I can’t instruct you to tap on a specific experience you’ve had because I don’t know what they are!

But you do; so as anything pops up, tap on it and release it. The more specific we get, the more the global tapping will “stick”.

And as a bonus, I’m also including one of the Tapping App Meditations to assist you even further.

Getting Back on Track

That’s it for now, just a couple of quick rounds to ease the burden a bit, release some stress and help you get more clear around food.

Until next time…

Keep Tapping!

Nick Ortner

Thx for these little ‘tune ups’ you send out. I really love getting them. Gotta tell you how GRATEFUL I am to be able to say I have NO stress on what to eat, how much to eat or the nutrition in my food…. I greew up and most of my life i was anguished by those statements but for the past 3 yrs my husband & I have taken control of our eating/nutrition & ourselves. We started 3 yrs ago on the Flat Belly Diet (we call it an eating program for life) one can 7 will loose weight but the main thing is it is a fabulous guide of how to eat and the best foods to eat. It’s put out by prevention magazine and we have a couple of great cookbooks that have given us fabulous foods – we are both in sales and eat out a lot but this has helped us regulate that. I take my lunch and snacak to work daily now – never did before. Another GREAT source of fabulous, nutritional food is Clean Eating magazine. Best of luck Now if you could come out with ANXIETY in general – i’m in !! 🙂

Very interested in DVD or vidio conferencing. I am a “boomer” in a wheel chair. I am not over weight and I anguish over what I take in. My life is not fun.

  3. Jennifer says:

Yes a seminar for weightloss and food issues would be so welcome!

  4. Leena says:

    Hi Nick,

Thanks a lot for such article. I am interested in the workshops conducted. Where can I find information?

    Dear Nick,

I love this post and will put a link to it from my Learn to Eat Well blogsite.

You’ve hit the nail on the head about how people feel about food these days. My nutrition coaching approach combines information about healthy eating with coaching techniques to help deal with all the negative brainwashing we’re been subjected to for so long. I also mention tapping as part of my courses so I think your post and website will be good resources for my delegates.

    Wishing you well

Thanks so much, Nick, for this TERRIFIC and most helpful topic which I have personally been trying to deal with lately…what to eat and whose nutritional advice to follow to help with a health issue I’ve been dealing with the past year. You and your sister Jessica’s work has been helping me out especially lately. I’m interested in nutrition for overall, whole health including breast health and I would LOVE to attend a live workshop of yours in Connecticut soon. I was at the event you did at Omega Institute this year and I know that you’ll be as engaging of a speaker and as helpful as ever. Thank you both for helping so many people to get back on track. Also, I did this exercise this morning and it did make me feel lighter and more hopeful about the issue so that I’m hopefully not as fearful of my food choices. “Coincidentally” I had been coming in to work today on the subway and actually writing a list of what I want to have manifested in my life and an “easy, tasty, healthy food plan” was part of my list… then I got to work and saw your email for the first time on that very topic today! WOW!

  7. Dino says:

    Thanks man, much appreciated.

  8. Twyla says:

I laughed at the statement because I had a big mac last night, then after the tapping I thought of a healthy breakfast I wanted to make. I find that I get bored with food and as a result do the mindless thing of eating what ever ad I happen to see at the time.

  9. Annie says:

I would love there to be an online tapping summit re food/body issues and I am sure many of my subscribers would be interested.

    thanks 🙂

  10. Ephne says:

Thanks Nick! For the past 16 years I have been trying to get my weight down and have just about tried everything – really struggling! I must say that I am beginning to see some results, but after losing 6 kg I hit a plateau. Today I started on what is called an `11 day diet’. I was so busy this past weekend that I had no time to read my mail and this tapping session with you came at the right time … I had some real misgivings about the cheese that was included in today’s menu! After the tapping session I feel much less stressed and am going to do it again right now. Thanks again.

  11. Jane says:

    Thank you that was wonderful

  12. Anne says:

Like some earlier commenters, I’ve recently lost quite a lot of weight, and because of that success, I didn’t realize how much stress I was getting into over food choices–about sticking on my diet, not regaining, etc.

This tapping session was wonderful for bringing perspective and helping me release that stress. Maybe I really CAN trust my body to guide me in permanent weight maintenance. Thank you!

  13. Mary says:

Thank you so much Nick, you truly are an inspiration to everyone who believes in tapping. I had never thought of connecting food and tapping but it certainly fits and is perfectly logical. Some time ago I was thinking about my diet and concluded that it wouldn’t help to tap about food because we’re all being poisoned by the corrupted food we eat, right…..I mean, how can tapping change the way food is produced on a global scale with all the insecticides and other pollutants. So even though I find it a stretch to tap on that, I’m willing to believe that it’s possible to tap into a healthful mind-set and believe I can find the right foods to eat anyway.

  14. Ann says:

Love it, amazing thanks so much

  15. Sara says:

Thanks Nick! I went from a 1 to a 4 with the tapping on food! Work to do… I like the interconnections of the web – that I learnt about Donna and Body Ecology from Tera Warner, Raw Divas and bought the book…then here you are talking about the same thing, Im reading about coming at with EFT. I learnt theres a UK practitioner of both and I feel held in my journey. Your food topic interests me. I LOVE it that you make yourself available free of charge in order to advance this work – and it does. I would not have come to it except by you and now I have I’m so grateful. I really loved the summit recently. Yes I WOULD be interested in a Spring focus on food.

  16. Cindy Grochowski says:

Thank You! Just today family members were commenting on our frustrations about food and our mixed feelings about what to eat and what not to eat and our guilt if we eat something that tastes good, but isn’t necessarily “healthy.” Another great tapping session! Thank You.

  17. Ellen says:

I’ve had food issues for a long time. Many have greatly improved over the years but I noticed that during my tapping today the issue of eating for health came up. I was diagnosed with an advanced cancer 2 1/2 years ago and that ups the ante for food choices. There are so many recommendations for diets for healing cancer often very different. Choosing the right direction with such potential high stakes has been challenging.

  18. Louise says:

The universe is so amazing. The timing is great. I just learned about tapping at your World Summit. Then, I read Donna Gates’ new book The Baby Boomer Diet. So, this information and tapping session was right on track. Thanks.

  19. Shannalee Hansen says:

I am interested in you doing a three day seminar around this topic, however the only way I’d be able to attend is if it were online. Is that possible?
    Thanks!

  20. Diane Crowley says:

Hey, I was not able to say that I was at a 1 after I finished tapping. I was definitely a 1 when I started. It’s like I couldn’t get the number 1 to materialize in my thoughts in relation to what I had just tapped. Thanks, and I would be interested in a seminar.

  21. Alison Heathcote says:

I feel good about what I am going to give my body to eat now that I have tapped. Thank you. I intend to join the local organic food distribution in the Central Coast of New South Wales in Australia so that I eat only organic foods. I already indulge in green smoothies every day and sometime red smoothies when I use raw beetroot – which is delicious! Anything edible and green goes into the smoothies including dandelion leaves, strawberry leaves and plantain leaves from my garden. Thank you again and keep up with the good work. Please keep those emails coming and I would be interested in Connecticut next Spring.

    hi nick, jessica
a big appreciation for opening your insiders club up for me. i’m listening to it everyday, and tapping of course. i am amazed at the implications of tapping for the big picture (peace, health and happiness) and inspired by your efforts in rwuanda (sp).
so things are moving forward. thanks again.

  23. Asmaa says:

    Thank you Nick!
It came on just the right time! I have had issues with food in time of the year.

  24. Jenny says:

This looks great. Have used tapping before on weight/healthy eating issues with minimal success. Do not have a big weight issue, but a few kilo’s that i would happily release!!!! So much confusion around food. I have a friend who has a wonderful healthy attitude to food in her late 60’s. Diet is mostly healthy, raw organic vegie based, but will eat anything and everything she wants with no guilt. She is wonderful to cook for as she thoroughly enjoys the experience. She will devour foods that are supposedly bad for you with as much enthusiasm as a healthy salad. She remains slim, with no food hang ups.
Have had success with tapping in other areas. Love the script.

  25. Teresa says:

    Hi Nick
love tapping I am interested in doing this not just to help my self but others. I already do massage and reiki and I feel this would fit in with this and help some of the people that come to me. Can anyone teach this. All the best and thanks for sharing Teresa

  26. Karla Enciso says:

Thank you very much for sharing this valuable information with us, so detailed and easy to follow. I am mexican and I live in Cancun, and for me it was a pleasure and and invaluable gift to have found an EFT page from someone who cares so much for tapping and loves it too.

Thank you very much for this posts.

  27. Barbara M. says:

    Thak you Nick.
This is a big problem for me. I was just having a fight with myself over wanting to eat a snack of junk food. Instead, I did your tapping and now I believe I can get through the evening without it. I will do it again tonight before bed too.
Thanks again. I appreciate the help.

    Barbara

  28. Sr. Catherine Janeway says:

Thanks this so helpful. I went from a 1 or 2 to 5. I am a diabetic so I have lots of guilt and fear about my poor eating. Which of course doesn’t help with healthy eating. Did several rounds on these “specifics.” I am so grateful that Tapping is in the universe and for the Summits. A summit on weight and eating would be invaluable, and I bet overwhelmingly high numbers would attend. Thanks so much. Sr. Catherine

  29. Elizabeth says:

Great tapping script, Nick. Thank you for sharing. I especially connected with the line:
“Once I choose to eat something, I relax and release any guilt, fear and anxiety around it”
It is those negative emotions that we ingest as we eat that do us more harm than the physical food whatever it may be.

  30. Diane says:

Dieting and weight loss and exercise came up and needing tapping. I would be interested in an in-depth few day tapping on this area of concern.

  31. Kadri says:

    Hey, Nick!
This tapping thing.. I love the feeling of release that it’s giving me!
I wanted to join your community too:)
    Just didn’t have a credit card. It’s not a joke. !
I READ EVERY MAIL YOU SEND, Nick!
    Thank you!
    Please keep writing!

  32. Mayadene says:

    Hi, Nick:
What a terrific feeling of freedom from feeling guilty about being possesed about eating because I am diabetic. Just before opening the e-mail, I had just finished chowing down a 12 inch subway(combining bkfst and lunch). I checked in at a five to begin the tapping. After two rounds, I rechecked. With a smile and my heart feeling more joy with self-pleasure, I registered a 3. I need to note that while doing the tapping I was aware that I initially was not feeling quitly but thinking guilty. Hence, the joyful and happy feelings at the end sans feeling guilty. I believe it was your pre-dialogue that helped to create the shaping factors for a changing situation. This tapping exercise was indeed sans painful and enjoyable, easy to do; i.e. short, sweet and to the point. It is one that I can readily endorse. Thanks a munchkin.

  33. glenn hamann says:

thanks for your genuine concern for others well being…….thanks for taking time from your life to actually teach others how to improve the quality of their life………so many of us all agree that the problems we share are real………but you actually offer resolve and results……. God bless you my friend……….gratefull, Glenn Hamann

  34. Pamela says:

Did the tapping. Exercise moderately 64 years young and extra 25 pounds that need to come off. Eat and drink wine often to excess at night while I enjoy tv. Regret it every morning but do it again and again.
I am going to tap to get thismhabitmbroken.
A live webinair moderately priced workshop would be great. Attendance is cost prohibitive.
    Nice share.
    Thank you
    Pamela

  35. Rebecca says:

P.S. I didn’t take half the pie, just a larger than normal piece. Didn’t want anybody to think i would call half a pie a large piece :-))

  36. Rebecca says:

Thank you Nick!!! This is so timely for me, as I sit here with an upset stomach for eating too large of a piece of pumpkin pie!!! I normally wouldn’t eat this and am trying hard to clean up my food act! But yesterday I took a dear older friend shopping to Whole Foods. She loves sweets and bought the pie. When we arrived at her house she insisted I have HALF the pie!! How do you tell someone no, who is only trying to be nice to you?? She knows I’m diabetic but in the 19 yrs I have known her, she just keeps offering me sweets!! And, it was organic!! Right?? Yep, my excuse and lack of will-power won!!! Ugh!! Today I woke up very tired and achy all over!! I also am trying to heal from CFS so I KNOW all that sugar did NOT help!!! I wanted to let you know I started out with a 6 and improved to a 9!!!!! Thank you for all you and Jessica do for all of us, I am so happy and feel so blessed to have found you both!!! And I LOVE Jessica’s voice!!!! Love and light!!!

  37. Catherine Clark says:

Thanks for all the wonderful tapping experiences you give us. I learned about EFT many years ago to help with body and weight issues. This is the topic I’m most interested in: Reducing the negative emotions which lead to over eating and weight issues in general. I really want to believe that I can maintain a healthy weight instead of having 5-6 sizes of clothing in my closet

  38. Joy says:

Thank you for this . I have been stressed about what to eat and what not to eat. From this tapping i realise i can choose to be relaxed about food and that there is THAT wiithin me that can choose the right food because my body knows what is good for it. This exercise makes me face my thoughts on food and let go of all the different things i hear or read and deal with the ME who knows the answer. Great!cause i am now about to have my lunch and am choosing to enjoy it

    Joy

  39. Andrea says:

Would love to see extensive tapping around overeating, cravings, eating too fast, being exposed to junk food but peacefully choosing not to eat it (work in a school where fries, pizza sweets are around constantly) what came up for me was I feel like I’m walking in a field of food landmines- I want to relax about food and not focus on weight loss and let it adjust naturally as I tap, eat healthy but feel anxiety and pressure that if I don’t get a handle on this I will have serious health consequences

  40. dawn says:

Also, would love a tapping workshop on the subject of food but 1- 2 days would be more fitting in with my schedule than 3.

  41. dawn says:

Thanks for the tapping exercise about food. I started out today around 7/10 so I was somewhat relaxed, but it’s only morning! This past month I’ve been very upset and disappointed with myself for gaining weight over the last few months and I am going to use this tapping exercise when I’m feeling stressed about eating/what to eat.
    Thanks,
    Dawn

  42. Sharon says:

Hi Nick, thank you so much for all you do – and this especially. My take – I came to understand that I didn’t love myself enough to put MY dietary needs first, instead of making all the cooked and unhealthy meals that the rest of my family wants first and then running out of energy and just grabbing bread, or pasta or anything that will almost cook itself (that I’m not badly allergic to ) just to ‘fill the hole’. I know where my tapping needs to go now. Again – thank you and Alex and Jess for all of your generous sharing of information.
    Blessings

  43. Renee says:

Wow! So I went through this tapping sequence yesterday afternoon at work (but I didn’t say the statements outloud, just said them to myself). One of the things that came to me while I was doing it was my lack of confidence in cooking for my family. Perhaps one of the reasons for my snacking is so that I’m not hungry and then I get irritated that I have to be the person responsible for feeding my family even though I’m not hungry, and then I want to just get them fast food or the like. So I brought my 3 young children to the grocery store after doing the tapping session and just casually bought all the items for spaghetti with meatballs – not really stressing about it like I normally would. When we got home I started cooking – again no stress about being a bad cook, etc. All five of us ate and enjoyed the food and had seconds. Something really happened through this session. I may not be able to articulate exactly what it was, but this was seriously a huge change in how my family handles meal time. We all sat together, ate something nutricous, and enjoyed each others company. Thank you so much! I’m really excited to tap on a few more issues that have been holding me back. 🙂

  44. Lisa says:

    Hi Nick,

Yes, yes, YES! Please do more work with food, weight, and tapping. I love the script that you used above because it doesn’t endorse a particular “style” of “healthy eating,” (i.e, low fat, low cal, low carb, vegan, etc.) the definition of which, as we all know, varies greatly depending upon whom you talk to. In my opinion, there is not enough of this kind of tapping out there. It would certainly help me. I’ve been dealing with weight, food, and body image issues since I was a child and I’m ready to let all of it go. I appreciate all that you (and Jessica and the others who promote EFT) do to help so many of us live our best lives.

  45. Cheryl Allen says:

    Nick,
Thank you for sharing this valuable information. Lately, I have been having an urge to take better care of myself & family. With a busy lifestyle, it’s sometimes hard to eat right. Lots of guilt around what I feed my 8 yr old. I always try to make sure she eats right, but she doesn’t always want to eat what I offer. I tapped on myself and then for her and I feel much better and more confident that she will be attracted to more nourishing foods. Been with you since January 2010. I am sooooo greatful that I have found you. I tap every day. My daughter has just realized some of the benefits of tapping. I encourage her often. Thank you and your family for all you have done for everyone!! Tap on!

    In Light And Love,

    Cheryl Allen

  46. Linda says:

I love tapping so much. I tap at least once a day, sometimes more. I listened to your 2011 Tapping World Summit and loved it. I would greatly enjoy a mini summit on just weight and all the underlining issues we have with it.

  49. Denise Koch says:

    Hi Nick,
There is definitely a need for food issue tapping! I personally stress out about my food choices as it relates to my cholesterol/blood pressure issues. It always seems I crave the fat rich foods I should be avoiding. Not sure why, but tapping should break these cravings.
    Thanks for the tapping session!

The control is my huge issue regarding everything in my life, and food and eating the right things for my body.
